View Full Version : Kleenex vs. Toilet Paper.
Has anyone compared the weight, efficiency, and personal satisfaction of carrying and using Kleenex instead of Toilet Paper for, errrr, ummm, the typical Toilet Paper applications?
I've used both and would recommend sticking with TP. But both will get the job done. I ran out of TP on the Foothills Trail and resorted to using an Arby's paper bag... that wasn't a pleasant experience. :D

I quit carrying TP all together. During my thru I carried the small moistened wipes ...the odorless ones that are flushable. Easy to find at grocery stores and convenient marts.
Open the pack, squeeze out all the extra fluid and then stick them in a small zip lock.
Great for taking care of business and getting in a bit of hygeine all at the same time.

Option 3: Flushable, biodegradable wet wipes for that delicate region
Option 4: http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/toilet_paper_free.html
No TP. Actually it sounds gross at first but after learning to identify the appropriate flora, it is quite easy. And, if it has just rained, or raining even, it is as good as option 3!:D
And, its free and you dont have to carry it. The wolly lambs ear is quite prevalent along the high elevations of the CDT and works well:p

I've found that I like to carry kleenex in those small individual packages for 1 or more day trips. Easy to deal with. You can put 'em in your top pocket when your ready to use them.

 I found that pinecones work well for this application, but you can only "wipe" with them in one direction.
cones from white pine work Ok but cones from pitch pine, table mtn. pine and a bunch of others are only used by extreme masochists

CNN Money Fortune Magazine brings Kleercut Campaign to the business world. Senior writer, Marc Gunther's article "Are Kleenex tissues wiping out forests? (http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/26/magazines/fortune/pluggedin_gunther.fortune/index.htm)" lays out the arguments on both sides and comes out with Greenpeace on top.
Are we weighing our toilet paper now? Where have all the backpackers gone? :(

Are we weighing our toilet paper now? Where have all the backpackers gone? :(I'm here.:) I've never weighed a single piece of gear in my life. I usually hoist up my pack and the smile just comes naturally.:sun

My Sherpa guide from Nepal told me that he once was hired to teach people how to wipe with a rock! seriously! He was amazed at the things he's been paid to teach.

Oh, I thought hoisting the pack was enough to bring a smile. Like, maybe you had a special friend in gravity or something. ;)
Oh, I thought hoisting the pack was enough to bring a smile. Like, maybe you had a special friend in gravity or something. ;)Actually it is. I never said there wasn't a small tear welling up.;) My spirit soars every time I even get in the car to go on a backpacking trip. It really is my favorite activity that I spend my free time on.:sun

I use TP and carry some light paper towels and a small bottle of Witch Hazel for those extra cleansing moments. Ever hear George Carlin's bit on what and how to keep clean?

I use the wetwipes. A friend in college told me about "reusables" like nylon umbrella material. Never tried that one.
Heard of using used coffee filters never tried it though but I guess in a pinch.

TP and tissues seem to be pretty much equal for any application. I carry TP cuz its more convenient for me. I've used leaves in the past and I wasn't too impressed. Saving weight isn't an issue here since TP is not heavy by any definition of the word. I think people who use pine cones and rocks are just plain weird. But....to each their own!
Isn't this what the bandana is for?
