I had my mind made on an Osprey Atmos 50 but in person it seems a little small. The salesman wasreally talking up the Deuter Futura model, one that I had no knowledge of. Any ideas??

My son has their kids model - the Fox 30. I'm happy with its quality and such. Not lightweight, but light enough and seems to be put together well.

Haven't used their adult packs, though.

My youngest also has a Deuter day pack he uses as his backpack. It workd fine, but like Jeff I have no experience with the adult packs.

I used a Deuter Futura 38 for perhaps 80 miles of the Tour du Mont Blanc this past summer after my Mountainsmith Ghost became recalcitrant. It was sturdy and well made, with an integral raincover built into a zip compartment on its bottom, which I actually found terrific, much to my surprise. It had an air-mesh back similar to that on the Osprey Stratus series, and had a hydration sleeve inside. Definitely not lightweight goods, but comfortable with my 10-15 lb. load, which included lunch, 2 quarts of water, and hut gear. Deuter is a prominent brand in Europe and is generally well thought of. I have used an Osprey Stratos 32 also. The size comparison is not direct, but I prefer the Osprey for reasons I can't really articulate...it just suits me a little better. They're both above-average packs.

i used the deuter futura 42 for 750 miles of the AT in 2002. it was about 2500 cubic inches, which isn't very big, but worked fine for late spring/summer hiking. and, the air vent on the back was the envy of every hiker i met. i'd recommend a deuter any day.

hi uk-blue,

funny. deuter is the #1 in backpacks in germany. very good quality for reasonable price. innovative and good materials used.

however i have been shopping for an osprey and will end up spending more money on the us pack, than i would have on a comparable german pack.

i have seen an osprey amalia in use on 2000miles of at. it totally convinced me. so i am going osprey!
