I have been taking a hammock to sleep in over the last couple of years, both backpacking and kayak camping. I hang a double Eagles Nest and simply use 5mm line to tie to trees, usually just wrapping a time or two around the tree and then use a loop and a biner to secure to the hammock heck, I've have even used a tautline hitch on occasion.

I have never fallen (yet), it doesn't seem to be harming the trees (yet), but I think that a webbing system could be more effective. Am I right in thinking you secure the webbing (somehow) to the tree and then tie the hammock line to the webbing?

Help here please folks, I love sleeping in the hammock, I've had a couple of vertebrae and sleeping in a hammock is primo!

My weight is probably more than it should be but since I usually stay out only a max of 7 days, it's no biggie for me, most trips are 3-4 nights and when kayak camping, weight is not a concern.

Tips? Advice? Knots?

Thanks,

Bobby

Here is the knot (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=79) that I use. Some people use risk's variation (http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=80). I attach my webbing to the hammock and do not use any rope. The webbing that Ed Speer sells link here (http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/PRODUCTLINK2.htm) (scroll down the page), only weighs 5 oz for 24'.

I made my own webbing system by taking a length of webbing and sewing a loop on each end- then just slip the webbing around the tree and one end of the webbing through one loop and attach the hammock to the un used loop- tightening is done with some rope thing-a-majig I found at ems which allows me to tighten or slacken the hammock...............does this make any sense- its really quite simple

There are a few people on hammock forums that are using them and seem to like them. I like the straps attached to the hammock. For me that is less pieces to keep track of. My sleep system consists of 4 pieces, hammock(with straps attached)/underquilt in snake skins, tarp in snake skins, sleeping bag in stuff sack, and stakes in a bag. Works for me.

I think Blackbishop that posts here uses them.

I definitely don't reccomend the yellow nylon rope from walmart, it frays and one morning at 2 am you will feel a falling sensation and then wake up and feel a thud! very unpleasant.:(
