SO I am learning the whole hammock thing and am shopping. I was wondering if someone could list the parts or ingredients of a hammock. Are there drawings I can look up? I just want to know what each part is called so when I read thee posts, I know what people are talking about. The lingo!

Hey Jeff, I have seen you posting all over the place. Where should I buy this stuff? I mean do I just order online? You seem to be one of the novice hammockers.

Ed Speer at speerhammocks.com has a hammock book that is helpful, a kit he sells if you want to make your own, and other ideas too. He's a great guy. Everyone else has great ideas too, it's all good in a hammock.

Ed Speers site has the best deal I found on webbing and velcro if you need it. I ordered noseeum netting from www.owfinc.com (http://www.owfinc.com) . I ordered some material from ebay for the actual hammock material. Ed's site has the only complete kit I have seen. But I like some of the other options and better prices out there.

I forgot to add that Walmart sometimes carrys ripstop nylon for $1 a yard. It takes some searching and is hit or miss. It is sometimes hrd to tell what weight and what treatments they have.

I check out a few forums - here, Hammock Forums, Rock's, the Yahoo group, and every now and then I'll post on PBF.

Depends on what you want for where to buy. Can you make your own? It's really simple if you can use a sewing machine or know someone who can. If not, buying online is a great option. REI and a few other stores carry Hennessy Hammocks, and sometimes you'll find Eagle's Nest Outfitters in the stores...those are the two most common brands of camping hammocks carried by the stores I've been to. Pretty much everything else you'll have to buy online. Also check out Speer and Clark.

So check out the models, decide which features you want and how much you're willing to spend, then come back and ask about the model you've chosen...someone here has probably used it already and can give you some good feedback.

Then, figure out how to stay warm and dry in it. That's where it gets fun...
