I am headed south for January. I was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base back in the '60's but have not hiked in that area since then.

I climbed Mt. Wrightson in 1969. Perhaps I will do it again, but I am interested in suggestions for good day hikes in the Tucson area.

I know whenever i go visit my friends slo ride and shake and bake in Tucson, we often go hike some trail just east of town. I don't remember the name but it's easy to find i think. Also, the AZ trail is not far away. I'd jump on that if i were you although i think parts of it down there are at too high an altitude for the winter unless your geared for snow and ice. I know it goes thru Patagonia which is about 40 miles south of tucson. have fun.

Lots of good hiking in Tucson. I used to like hiking in the Rincons - in what is now Saguaro National Park (East). There is also a nice loop out of Sabino Canyon/Bear Canyon. If you have time to drive, the Chiricauhuas have some nice rock formations.

Thanks, Fiddlehead. I wasn't even aware that there is an Arizona Trail. I checked the web site for the ATA, and it looks like that will work fine for me. I have rented a place in Green Valley which isn't far from the Arizona Trail.

40 years ago, I did a lot of day hiking in the mountains around Tucson. It appears from the ATA web site that the Arizona Trail runs right through the area where I used to hike.

Thanks.

Today I climbed the "Old Baldy" trail to Josephine Saddle. The trail was 80% snow covered. We got too late of a start to make it all the way up Mt. Wrightson, but had a good hike.

I am wondering why I didn't bring my YakTrax. They would have really been appropriate today.
