A few months ago someone asked about a hammock chair. I found this just a couple minutes ago:

Thanks. I had one that died this summer after only 16 years. I never brought it indoors, but hung in a screened porch. The price of 2 for $99 is great, expecially as you could regift one.

I was one of the people discussing the hammock chair. This design has three problems for backpacking use by those with mobility / back problems:
1) due to the mandatory spreader bar at the top, the weight is prohibitive.
2) it is hard for someone with a back problem or a weak leg to exit this hammock because of the signle suspension point
3)the single overhead suspension point also would make it difficult to tarp over the hammock chair in bad weather

I like the design and have explored ways to use it in a four-corner type suspension system hammock chair.

This chair is definitely not for hiking, but for a fairly permanent installation with lag bolts and the like. I have found it very comfortable when my back was acting up. It can be adjusted for height to make entry and exit easier. Works well as a recliner and a chair.

But definitely not for hiking.

seems there are some post about hammock chairs that are def. not backpackable....the above link is to a hammock chair that could be.. at 1.875 pounds its not going in my backpack but for some who knows. I've got this hammock chair and it def. goes into the kayak for lazing around post-paddle in camp.

The design I'm working toward is somewhat similar to The Mountain Swinger. I'm trying to replace the spreader bars with a system of tethers / guy ropes that will spread the person's weigh somewhat evenly over the length of the chair (what the spreader bars do in TMS). Tweaking that system is what is taking so darn long.

i'd wonder how much the ropes/pulleys/stays/etc. would way against the spreader bar of the MountainSwinger....

Ah. there's the rub... so far I've only been able to get a somewhat workable system down to around 15 bulky and not-so-stable ozs - but I know I can get it lower. I have permanent damage to my right leg that makes getting up and down from the ground really hard and makes squatting impossible so having this will be important enough to justify its weight in my situation. Since this is an item I will need for the rest of my life, I'm going to take my time and do it right. I also want it to be absolutely safe for Mother Nature and a few others with serious back problems and for some others with leg / hip problems that make getting up and down hard. Once I get it right, I will patent the pattern and release it to freely to anyone who want to make one (and I’m making one for Mother Nature because she is a ray of sunshine :))

Happy New Year, Mrs. Dino!

You certainly brought a smile to my face on this rainy New Year's morning!

I have complete confidence that you will lick this chair suspension problem! I don't think I have ever met someone who can take on challenge with such grit and determination. We can keep this group hug going but you are an inspiration to me.
