Try the ATC, here (http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.851255/k.4226/Appalachian_Trail_GIS_and_GPS_Data.htm).

To start I have tried using a GPS unit on a couple of my section hikes and found it to be a waste of time. When I did VT it was only of use on the tops of the mountains. In PA it worked only on the top of ridges and then only when I had a good view of the sky. NJ/NH and ME I did not use it. Left it home.

But if you want you can buy DeLormes Topo and get all the info of it. Also there is a section on here (WhiteBlaze) that gives all the Long/Lats of the shelters.

I can't imagine why you would think you need them. The trail is extremely well marked. On the AT if you go more than five minutes without seeing a blaze you go back and you will pick up the blazes again. Also, the trail winds a lot, so GPS readings aren't going to help you stay on course. The shortest route between two points is not necessarily a straight line.

Go to This Site (http://www.topozone.com/viewmaps.asp) and Select State, Select County, Select Feature (Mountain, Ridge,
Creek, Shelter, Gap Etc.) It will display a TOPO Map of the area w/coordinates that you can change North, East, South, West or click on an
area within the map to get coordinates.

Hello. Does anyone have the GPS Coordinates for the start of the 100 Mile Wilderness in Monson, ME ? The coordinates at the actual sign at the start of the trail in Monson would be GREAT! :)

Thanks.
Pam

Thanks for the offer Strnorm. I do have mapsource National Parks East on my garmin. I have marked out all of the water sources, huts/camp****es, unpaved roads on the 100MW route that I mapped out. Any other coordinates that you have that you think could be helpful to add to my route?

I did read a few posters that couldn't understand why you would need a GPS on the AT since it's so well marked. I think it is extremely convenient to be able to check on the GPS how far away the next watersource is, so that you can decide if you can wait to fill up on water, or if you might be far away from the next water source.

Thanks!
Pam

Using a GPS on the AT is a "want." Using a GPS on more remote, lesser marked trails is closer to a "need." When I hiked a chunk of the CDT with Tex I was impressed how easily he confirmed our trail options. We didn't even have to break stride to know that we'd made the correct turn or what ever. All I want to have on the AT is where the water and re-supply is. The AT is so well marked even a blind man can hike it.
