I'm heading up to Standing Indian with Almost There, and possibly a newbie, Tuesday after Christmas. AT is keen on completing a NC section to be done with the state - Deep Gap to Winding Stair Gap. We have a question about Deep Gap and the road up there.

I expect that the road to Deep Gap is closed for the season, and that the best access will be the Backcountry Parking Lot and Kimsey Creek Trail. I haven't found any information about break-ins or access problems looking at the ATC and Nantahalla Club's websites.

Anyone know about the situation up there?

I've left my car at the backcountry kiosk several times without incident. There's always a first time of course, but it seems safe enough that I'd leave my car there again.

Same here. Last time was about a year ago.

Me, too. That area is my favorite for weekend loop hikes. I have left my car there quite a few times without incident. I do the usual things, of course--not have anything attractive visible through the windows, not leave anything that would be devastating to have stolen...

Thanks. I've always depended on the Backcountry Lot also.

What I was really wondering was whether Deep Gap road is open.

Probably. Last winter when I was there with my son it was closed, so we ended up walking out on the FS road.

Deep Gap road is "Always closed" Or at least it seems to be.

I have parked at Rock Gap, (just up the road from the backpackers Kiosk) twice for a total of about 3 weeks without incident.

Even if you have to hike the Kimsey creek trail it's a great trail, the AT along that section is way cool too.

Has deep gap rd been rebuilt since the huricanes? There are connecting trails up and down from the parking at the bottom and usually a lot of cars.

Ron, as always you are an awesome person. If OB doesn't read this before tomorrow I will talk to him tomorrow about what he wants to do. I know our plan is to head up Tuesday morning and start hiking. We would finish on Thursday and plan on heading home that day...I promised the wife I would be home by Thursday night...she's letting me hike on her week off...gotta keep my promise!

I rode in with a shuttle the day after Thanksgiving. The road is in good shape, and there were about 10 cars parked at the trailhead.

Enjoy the hike.
