Just got back from 4 days of duing Swift Run to Thornton Gap (12-15 Jun). Rain, rain, and more rain. No need for water bottles, just a cup and dip along the way! The trail in the SNP is in good shape, no major blow downs. Talked with some interesting thru hikers (Jim, Groovey, Nightwalker and others). Many had on "hiking kilts". Lots of deer and bears to see and avoid. All in all a good trip except for the rain.

:-? Do you think this stretch of the AT would be a good backpacking trip for a child who is eleven? I want to introduce my son to the AT, but I do not want him to be overwhelmed.
Thanks!

This is too long for an 11 year old first timer. I would do a few over nights, perhaps with a water fall or something "interesting" for an 11 year at the end of the 3-4 mile hike.
