Well, hikers, I'm leaving in a while for Neo's hammock weekend at Meriwether Lewis National Monument and campground on the Natchez Trace Parkway, south of Nashville, Tennessee. BTW, that's "Lewis" of "Lewis and Clark."

Pray for me! A hammock outing with Neo! I'm wondering if he holds religious services around his hammock and sprinkles it with snake blood! You know how fervently he feels towards his hammock! ~wink~

This'll be my first outing in my hammock, not counting my own back yard, that is. Hope to have a report and photos to post when and if I return.

Weather is supposed to be sunny, breezy, and 50s daytime, 30s at night. But this is "car camping" so I'm taking lots of firewood, warm clothes, good food, and my old Holubar sleeping bad (rated for Colorado winters)!

Well, darn it, I'm sitting here on call for the hospital. IOWs, I didn't make it. You guys should be in the thick of it now. I'm looking forward to the report, and I still hope to check out ML park in the future.

Those who arrived Friday evening were assigned to camping spots and then issued a schedule and lined up and marched to the campground amphi-theater, where Neo lectured and showed slides of his hammock and Jeep until past midnight. Everybody too tired to string up hammocks, so we all cowboy-camped.

Saturday morning, reveille was at dawn, followed by a quick breakfast, during which Neo announced the day's schedule, as follows:

8:00 till Noon - Compare and Contrast Instruction, Lecture, and Demonstration on the various hammocks available to hikers, kayakers, and Jeep-owners.

Noon-12:30 - lunch

12:30-4:30 - Test on the morning's materials, then practice pacing off distance between trees (until within 2 inches of correct distance). Climbing trees to analyze widow-makers. Study of sleeping pads and arrangements. Lecture by Neo on mosquito netting, hammock call-of-nature etiquette, stringing hammocks across the AT, below wasp nests, above coppperhead nests, beside nightclubs, and the like.

4:30-5:00 dinner and urgent bathroom break

5:00-8:30 - Amphitheater slide show on Hillary Clinton following by inspirational lecture by Neo on the physics of declination angles on dynamic virtual weights placed on lines and ropes, and known cases of catastrophic failure of lines, trees, and structures.

8:30-9:00 - Preparation for night hike.

9:00-Midnight - Night hike (2 hour hike, 3rd hour spent finding way when lost)

Midnight - too tired to erect hammocks per the day's instructions; cowboy camp again.

Sunday Morning - Prepare breakfast at dawn; wonder where Neo is, till 10:00 when he gets up. Pose for photos in front of Jeep, put hammocks (still in their stuff sacks) into trunks, wave goodbye to all the Ontarians occupying the entire campground, hit the Natchez Trace for Nashville and recovery.

Or, something like that!!!! Maybe others can flesh out and correct this preliminary report?! LOL

Midnight to 12:07 -- "Sex in a Hammock" Lecture and Demonstration canceled due to lack of volunteers despite plea that "it's only gonna take seven minutes."

very funny Rain Man.

This was my first time to hammock and I survived the night http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif . I had a 1/4" ccf pad and my therm-a-rest. I used my 15° as a quilt and it did ok. I didn't get cold but then again I have no idea what the temps were. Sometime during the night the bag ended up under me with the zipper on top. I went ahead and zipped it up until I had to go water the trees. I did manage to flip/roll/fall out of the hammock during the night http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif . I keep sliding most of the night. My feet would end up in the area where the end was tied off. I would push myself forward trying toget back to the other end of the hammock. I tried to pull the pads up also. This morning all of the pads were pushed down to the foot end of the hammock. I don't have a clue as to why this kept happeninghttp://www.hammockforums.net/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif
In all honesty this was probably my worst night of sleep ever http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif . When I got up my back was hurting from the way I slept?

I will try it again and see if I can change anything. Heck if we all stopped going camping or backpacking because we had problems no one would be out there again http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

My pics of the campout are posted here http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/558239931EfIpoH

Great report Rain Man. Now I know what I missed by sacking out early! (I’m just not a long hitter anymore.):(

Thanks, Neo, for putting the weekend together. I had a great time meeting everybody and got a chance to try out a number of different set-ups for the temperatures we encountered. Man, am I glad they weren’t SACRIFCING virgins at this event!!!;)

For what it’s worth: Friday night: temps 40-ish at bedtime (after the Jeep / hammock lecture), 35 by morning (a little ice in the water bottle, so it might have been colder). Set-up: Hennesy ULBA, JRB tarp, InsulMat air mattress, SPE w/3/4”ccf wings, 25 deg. WM bag as quilt. Wearing: fleece top/bottom, MicroPuff top, balaclava, fleece socks. Comments: got cold about midnight, added 3/8”ccf to the InsulMat; slept comfortably until dawn. Conclusion: air mattress no enough insulation for my comfort range.

Saturday night: same temps, although not quite as cold; sacked out early due to complete mental exhaustion caused by Neo’s discussion of declination angles on dynamic virtual weights. (Declination always gets me down and the virtual weight of anything is hard to understand, much less compute!) Set-up: HH ULBA w/Sportsman’s Guide custom underquilt, JRB tarp, SPE w/3/4” wings and ¾”ccf pad in the center, WM bag as quilt. Wearing: fleece top/bottom, hiking sock set (liners/oversock), balaclava. Comments: wind shifted about 3AM and could feel the chilling effect, added MicroPuff and 3/8”x10”x20” ccf as butt pad to cut the chill. Slept comfortably until dawn. Conclusion: I need a little more insulation to make it comfortably into the 30’s.

Suggestions on improving my cold weather performance (of the hammock) are appreciated.;) Looking forward to the October event.

Looks like you had a good time. Neo, we need you in FL to organize our next gathering. It looks like you had 4 more people than we did. We only had 4 if you count Friedan's dog Ed

Congrats on your first hanging. Keep working on it and you will be a pro in no time. Might want to get a zip thermometer from either REI or Campmor.
