Hi Rufus!

If you are on a budget, I suspect the "official" windscreen may be a bit expensive, esp. once shipping and handling is factored in.

IF you do not want an "official" windscreen and just need something that works functionally the same, try purchasing a disposable cookie sheet (or similar) from the grocery store and cutting a windscreen to shape.

It is about the same thickness as the "official" MSR windscreen and weighs the same, too. Costs about about $1 or so.

Good luck on your hike!

I noticed in another thread you have an old one. Just sell it to yourself.:D

Hmm....never had that problem myself. What about smoothing it out with a bit of sandpaper?

Really? You made yours out of a cookiesheet and it didn't slash you? From one of the cheapie disposable tinfoil ones that you can find at dollar stores and all?

I thought I did a really good job w/mine, hmm, maybe I'll make another, try your suggestion w/ the sandpaper. Maybe turn over the seams twice or something...:-?

It does seem alot to pay $15.00 for a new MSR one.

Another option is to use some heavy duty alum. foil folded over a few times. May be slightly heavier, but less of a "futz" factor than sanding down your cookie sheet one.

I'm cheap myself...would not want to spend $15 (plus S&H) for a "genuine" windscreen.

A sliced hand is not good, though. :-)

Well, a couple of nice things about the MSR windscreen are that it is malleable, doesn't fatigue, and no sharp edges. I've spend the $ to have an extra one, so I have one for my alcohol stove.

How about double rolling the edges of the homemade version? Or would that be to thick to fold up for carrying.

Yeah, the operative word is "old". It's almost in two pieces now, metal fatique got it, I guess, after about 10 years of hard use...

Spring chicken. Mine is about 18 years old. I doubt if anyone's going to sell you a "used" one unless they've stopped using the stove...

Yeah, that was what I was hoping, someone who has one but doesn't use their whisperlite. Or something...

I've used the same homemade windscreen on the Long Trail, PCT and Colorado Trail. Mind you, it looked it too. :)

But, it worked rather well.

YMMV.
