This is not a joke!!! Would love to take my wife on a really pretty section of the AT -- two slack pack days -- and spend a night at a really nice inn somewhere within 3 hours drive of central connecticut. great if the inn keepers would give us the shuttles... i wonder if hanover, nh would work... any other ideas?

Mountain Meadows Lodge in Killington, VT is a B&B that I've returned to several times since my thru as a full paying customer. I know in the past they have participated in a program where you hiked inn to inn. (Actually, you did a day hike and then you were shuttled to the next inn.) Nice place. Good food. (They even provide a brown bag lunch for the day hikers). Worth checking out if that falls within your driving requirments.

Hanover could work, but there may well be something closer to home. For example, there are nice places to stay in Kent and Salisbury, Connecticut, very close to the Trail.
If you decide on Hanover and money is not an object, talk to the very nice folks at the Trumbull House B&B (603) 643-2370 Very nice people, and they're used to taking care of hikers. I think they also have a website.
Also, you didn't say what time of year you were hoping to do this.....please include more info. September in Maine is very different than it is in New York; June in Massachusets is lovely; June in Maine can be buggy and wretched. Please tell us more about your trip!
Lastly, the ATC (www.appalachiantrail.org) maintains a very complete, state-by-state list of reliable shuttlers who could help you with your trip.
Vermont has several Inns with the Trail nearby:
Manchester near Bromley- Alpine Rose Inn
Manchester Village- Inn at Manchester, Seth Warner, Inn at Ormsby Hill
Danby- Quails Nest B & B, Silas Griffith Inn
Wallingford- The Victorian Inn, Munson House B & B, White Rocks Inn
Killington- Inn at the Long Trail, Mountain Meadows Lodge
Norwich- Norwich Inn

hey, thanks so far... this trip would definitely not be until the spring... in fact, it would be either a spring or a fall weekend...the weather should be perfect, too!

I would highly recommend the Darby Field Inn, North Conway, NH. Very romantic, very elegant, very "New England", superb dining. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for in this life. I took my wife there for our anniversary this year. We stayed in the Mt. Washington Suite and got the candlelight dining package. We loved it and will be going there again next year. Very close to the AT in the Presidentials with many loop hikes tying in with the most beautiful part of the AT, and I'm sure a shuttle is available or can be arranged. The best bug-free warm weather hiking in this area will be from mid-June thru Labor day.

My wife and I do this every spring and fall,We sometimes camp a couple of nights on the A.T. then hike out to a nice Inn or B+B ,We've stayed at most of the Inn's along the CT. section and I can recommend a few places that are priced right,One of our favorites is the Fife & drum in kent in the Colonial suite,Let me know I can recommend others..
