I bought all the maps at Cheaha this past year. We are currently sectioning the trail...did section 9 this past weekend matter of fact. There are actually 11 sections open, not 9.

The maps are ridiculously priced at like $8 a pop, which is not really a good price considering the fact that they are printed on regular paper, which causes them to tear very easily (upon normal folding) and if they get wet at all they are ruined. Additionally, you can get most of the info you need from Solo's hard work over at www.hmtc.org. (He also has a new site coming up soon at www.pnrt.net; check back often for updates.) We printed out all of the guidebook, with pertinent maps, TH, and other info, and put it into a nice binder, which makes a good tool for hiking.

So, in actuality, you do not need the maps for hiking the trail. BUT, with that said, the maps do come in very handy when driving to the trail, and trying to find the best areas to pick up from your last section, especially if these areas are not at more established THs.

We dont have old maps we are willing to depart with, but I thought I would weigh in on the thread anyways. We are headed back out March 2-4 if you want to join.

Happy hiking!

Correction: was just looking at the website...we did section 8 this past weekend. It was a nice little section of mostly ridgeline walking, but since it was leaf-off, we had excellent views.

I also got the full set at the Cheaha store and also the Talladega Forest map which is nice but not needed.
I don't think there is a paper map for section 9 yet but Solo has some on his site that you can print.
I'm almost done section hiking the whole thing and I was going to thru hike it in the spring so I don't want to let mine go yet. You can borrow them though.

Thanks for the Horn Mtn site... been there lots lately! I too am not impressed w/ the $8 each, thats why I was asking around. I will be on the trail beginning March 1st for a thru. Was going to delay til May 1st, but just found that the avg. temp rises from 62* (Mar) to around 80* in May!! I live in AL and I will NOT hike in 80* plus 90% humidity here!

Will be starting at the southern terminus/Bull Gap trailhead and heading north.

Are you going to leave a car at the Bull Gap trailhead. I was there back a few weeks ago and there isn't really any parking area. You have to just pull off on the edge of the dirt road. I drove up in a crappy old truck and was only out over night and didn't feel all that comfortable leaving it there, don't think I would leave something for 10-14 days there. Since you kindly offerd me a lift before, the offer stands on my end as well. I wouldn't mind giving you a lift or picking you up when your done. I am up that way most weekends anyways.
I was looking at my work sched for this comming spring and it doesn't look like I am going to be able to do a thru. I can send you the section 8, 7 and 6 maps now and the rest as I finish sectioning. As of now I have done from Bull Gap north to CR24. I may go up this weekend depending if my new JRB quilt arrives on Friday :). If it doesn't I may just head up to Oak Mtn to ride the MTB trial.

Mr. Parkay is thru hiking now hopefully he will post a follow up when he is done.

The little country store at the top of Cheaha Mtn. They were $8 each and you need 5 of them, covers section 1-8. I also spent $13 on the forrest map which is more for the roads not the topo features. There are no printed maps for the ATA section or Section 9 that I know of. You have to download them and print them out.

Here is some more map info and a great Pinhoti site.

Nitrous, thanks for the return offer, much appreciated! I have friends that live outside of Slyacauga and close to the Bull Gap TH. They will let me keep my car there and drive me in on my start date. (Shhhh... working/educating them on being trail angels and get them into doing this as needed for other hikers!!)

As for the maps... I think I'll just have to break down and buy them... I am inclined to make notes in the margins as I go (water, dead falls, hazards...) and wouldnt want to foul up someone elses stuff.

Also, N2O2 - you interested in hiking OM instead of riding it?

you can get most of the info you need from Solo's hard work over at www.hmtc.org. Nice site. He says the extender from the AL-GA state line to jackson Chapel Road (near GA100) should be done by late 2006. Do you happen to know if it is finished?

Hey Frosty and everyone else,

I just finished my thru of the Pinhoti yesterday, so I can definitely answer your question. The section between the AL-GA state line and Jackson Chapel Road is about half finished:

The maintained trail ends at the state line.... from here you have to bushwhack about 1.3 miles to a dirt/gravel road at the bottom of the mountain. The path to bushwhack is marked with red flags. It's easy to follow, and not too strenuous. The next mile of trail is pretty much complete and is a nice hike from there to jackson chapel road.

Hey Neo,

About journals: I have a trail journal with lots of pictures from my AT hike here: www.trailjournals.com/mrparkay, although I don't have a trail journal for the Pinhoti Hike. Although, I might create one to put up a few pictures. Unfortunately I don't have that many good pictures since my camera ran out of batteries... and I couldn't bring myself to use my disposable camera too much.

Hey ALHikerGal,

I have all of the maps if you still need any. I'd be happy to give them away freely. I purchased all of them at the spur of the moment... but was not very impressed with the quality, so I didn't bring them on my hike. I'll send you a quick PM too.

By the way, I'll be posting a whole bunch of Pinhoti Google Earth & GPS stuff over the next couple of days. I got the whole thing tracked out with waypoints galore. Should be some neat stuff.

Thanks, Mr Parkay. I had to send my GPS back to Garmin for repair (USB cable connector plug came loose. GPS worked but couldn'tup- or down-load), but when I get it back I may try for a Pinhoti thru if I can get one done before Mar 20.

Have you ever tried to figure out the GA Pinhoti? Enough of that done/marked to bother to hike?

Hey Frosty,

Yeah, I got the GA Pinhoti all figured out... I just finished a thruhike of both the Georgia and Alabama Pinhoti actually. The GA Pinhoti is a pretty decent trail, and I quite enjoyed it. It starts off flat with a 20 mile road walk, followed by a 10 or 15 mile railroad grade walk. From there on the trail gets more and more mountainous with a good deal of ridge walking. Much of the trail is on dirt and gravel forest roads. Towards the end the trail gets pretty rugged as you climb in elevation and get closer to the BMT.

The blazing was spotty at best. Some area's were blazed fairly well, other areas hardly at all. Didn't bother me too much, since I had a good deal of trail data loaded into my gps. May have been tough otherwise.

The problem is with the two road walks. The first is a 20 mile road walk in the beginning of GA. I hiked this in one day just to get it over with.... and didn't like it very much. Later on there is a 30+ mile road walk which goes through Dalton GA. I only walked about 10 miles of this then got a ride the rest of the way to the trail head by a local trail maintainer. Awesome guy named "Wormhead".

we will be possibly be out there march 2 weekend. we were definitely planning on the APT, but a friend we are going with now wants to go do part of the cumberland trail instead, so we may or may not be on the apt. if we do go to the apt and do the bull gap section, maybe we will see you there.

Hello,

I have used "National Geographic Adventure Paper" in the past and it works pretty well. It's completely water proof and doesn't tear very easily. The only problems are that it is expensive and a little bit heavier than regular paper. (the weight isn't much of an issue unless you are carrying lots of pages with you).

tia
ofthearthI printed out Mr. Parkay's excellent maps on regular paper.

I kept them stacked in a ZipLoc bag with the currrent map facing out. Facing out the back side of the ZipLoc was a list of Solo's water sources, campsites, and resective mileages.

I second Frosty's comment. Save your money, the Forest Service maps are not worth the paper they are printed on. Mr. P's maps are excellent!

The trail on the north end had been obliterated by loggers (its now re-opened) but with Mr. P's maps, I was able to navigate right thru the area!

I agree - however for roughly half the price our local Bass Pro big box also had "iGage Weatherproof Paper" which works well too.

Were you just able to use the maps or did you use gps as well? And on the subject of map paper - can you print on the back of the paper as well or is it a special paper that only works on one side? Was thinking of putting a map on each side. Somebody mentioned a map case. What have different people used?

I used a gps to help get thru the area, but Parkay's maps are topo and with the trees cut down you could easily see and follow the contour lines of the map and actually see the contours of the land in front of you!

I believe some of the papers are able to be printed on both sides. I dont have it with me at the moment, but I think the Nat'l Geo papers are like this.

I've printed both sides with both the NG and the iGage and used successfully in PA/NY rain/snow.
