I just finished sewing my own version of the Nomad 242. Instead of using two Leki Poles I'd like to use tent poles.
Does anyone out there use tent poles on their Nomad 242 instead of trekking poles? I recall way back when that Kurt offered the tent pole option, but he's not around anymore to ask.
Or, any recommendations of a good source for making your own sturdy tent poles?

PVC plumbing? I replaced one of my tent poles with some pvc. They even have the connectors.

PVC has one quality that makes it bad choice for cold weather camping - it becomes more brittle when cold.

I asked them about a small odd shaped pole for a bug bivy and they could get it. It appears they can do just about anything. I've yet to use them however.

M,
A few options... I have made tent poles out of graphite golf shafts. Can epoxy on small sections cut from steel shafts to make the connection hub. Many golf repair shops have them sitting around from re-shafting done for one reason or another. They have been known to sell them for very cheap and in some cases give them away if they are no longer usable in a golf club. Or you can probably have custom poles made by an outfit like http://www.fibraplex.com/tentpoles.htm Hope this is helpful... doodah-man
Wow!!! I was doing my standard whiteblaze surfing and checked out this thread. I have to compliment you all on wonderful/useful references and creative suggestions!!! (hope you don't mind...) Ms D, did I meet you at the Soruck?

Yes, you did meet me at the SoRuck. Was the older lady who walks with a cane.
...didn't seem older to me... and i meant the compliment about the thread.
Mrs Frolicking Dinosaur thanks for the Quest url. This is where I bought all the fabric and zippers for this project.
Gray Blazer great idea to try PVC piping. I'm a fair weather hiker and you don't usually see me camping in the cold. I'll play in the cold but head for the nearest warm home or cabin when it comes time to sleep!
Turkey Bacon neat site...I sent them an email to see what they come up with.
Doodah Man- great idea with the golf shafts. Kurt had a design using two golf ball retrievers, modified, in place of trekking poles. Looks like I'm going shopping at the nearest golf store....maybe I'll find a new sport while I'm browsing.
