Is it necessary to carry the section maps of the AT on a thru-hike?

Just wondering how much info is necessary to carry on a thru hike. My husband will be carrying the Data Book and I will be sending him pages of the Companion at his request in mail drops. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.:)
