I'm about to do a section of the AT in Mt. Rogers and was wondering if it was safe to park a car where the AT crosses 600 at Elk Garden.

I have parked there a couple times with no problems. This was three or four years ago so things may have changed, but I doubt they have. This has always been a pretty hiker friendly section. Either direction will be a great hike but north is the best of the two. Have fun you lucky &*@(%$! :)

I talked to a local who told me about a hiker whose brand new Audi got totally trashed parking there (pre-2000). If you can find someplace to park your car for $20 or $30, you'll have peace of mind, and an intact car when you're done with your hike.

You can park at my place in Damascus and I'll shuttle you. For free. There's been lots of break-ins and thefts this year all around the Mt. Rogers area.

I can vouch for Lone Wolf. He did the free parking/shuttle thing for us this past May at Trail Days.
