View Full Version : $6 "crocs" at Dollar General stores
(Feb 22) Was just in Dollar General today (this is the big discount chain store, has a yellow blocky-font sign). Not to be confused with Family Dollar, Dollar Tree, etc.
Anyway, they had "croc" knockoffs in adult sizes for six bucks! They looked identical to the name-brand ones that sell for 29.99 most places.
Just FYI if anyone needs "croc" type shoes on a budget.

will have to check them out---probably lighter than the original too.

If you have a Fred's in your area, I purchased a couple of pair at $7.85/pair. They are more comfortable than those I took on my hike.

I bought a pair of the DG 'Crocs' - they are a bit lighter and more comfy than my real Crocs.
For $6 I may try 'em. What colors do they come in? :D

Black, navy blue, dark brown and tan. I also saw some in smaller sizes in marine blue, pink and yellow.
For that price you can have a pair in every color. Wear a different color on each foot and make a fashion statement. ;)
Glad to hear they are in DGs elsewhere too. What a great deal!

Mine had them here in VA - all womens sizes 11 or size 6. (!)
But I have three pair from Payless so I'm doing okay.

Thanks to this post, I picked up a pair in a DG here. They weigh 7.8 ounces, my real crocs weigh 11 oounces.
Got mine here in Croswell, MI
If they have them here, they must have them everywhere! Very comfortable.
Question:
Does the heel strap swing back like the real McCoys or are they for show only? Seem to be tightly fastened in the forward position. I don't wand to bust 'em.

 I saw this thread and Goggled Dollar General...simple click of store locator, zip code and KAPoohey....a distance of zero miles...hmm so there's one in my town huh..
Okay, never been and a mile from the house...yeah so I'm not much for shopping centers.
I bought my first pair off the net at a medical supply place and I think they were about $10.00 and that included shipping..I still have them and they have quite a few miles on them but they are just foam clogs without the thing that goes around the back. I found a need for that thing that goes around the back while wearing them to cross a creek swollen with snow melt.
I wasn't about to pay $29.00 for a $2.00 pair of foam shoes just becuase they have the name "Crocs" on them...plus what a rip off that they didn't even put the entire name on them "Crocs of S#it" $14.50 per sandal that's a little steep for a pice of molded foam.
So...Thank You very much norub for posting this.
I happily paid $6.00 and know that I'll easily get $3.00 worth of wear out of each one.

I go bare foot at camp, and wear the trusty ole boots in towns. Why take up pack space and carry extra weight. Besides crocs look girly.

AustinLowes17, going barefoot without extensive preparation (look up the Barefoot Sisters for details) has some risks associated with it - cuts and infections head the list. The condition of your feet is vitally important to the success of your hike. I urge you to take care of them.

What LW suggest is a perfectly acceptable solution for those who don't want to carry extra shoes. I use the crocs to ford streams, to let my toosies breathe / get some rest from my superfeet in camp and to give my boots extra drying time overnight. I know I'm a girly tenderfoot, LW, but I am a girl :D

I checked these out at the DG in White Bluff, TN......of course they didn't have my size....11 is the biggest they had, plus I wasn't crazy about the baby blue color.

Just picked up a pair. These things are very, very comfy. Only colors they had were pink, black, and white. I opted for white. Not the best of colors, but hey, I'm not trying to impress anyone in the boonies. They are great for chiilin around the house as well.
yeah i go barefoot at camp too... and usually just go at deep streems with the boots off...
guess thats why im the hobbit...
haha
but seriously i can see the value of shoes that would breath but still keep your feet from freezing one those rainy midnight bathroom trips (they are so cold barefooted)

I'll agree that they are not the prettiest things to put on your feet...then again neither are my Keens. Wearing these Croc type sandal/clogs for fording rivers and streams works for me. They're cheap and weigh in at almost nothing. Comfortable? if you've tried them you know.
After a day of hiking one of the first things I like to do is get out of my boots and socks. I hiked in 1996 and these things weren't around. I took along a pair of Tevas that worked for me but they are heavier and not as comfortable as these little foam jobbies.
I'll agree that they are not the prettiest things to put on your feet...
They're so ugly they're cute! :D
I got the most outrageous color I could find, for 2 reasons. 1) Who cares about being proper or fashionable on the AT, for me it's a time to let loose and 2) the brighter they are, the less likely you are to overlook them at a campsite when you're packing up to leave.

Yeah and ........you might come away with a nifty trailname like "Pink Panther" that follows you for months.
Mine are bright orange. I bought them last yr at TD's. Holes was selling their discontinued models for 10.00

I found these at the DG next to the President's Weekend Cave-In in WV. Bought them in black and I love them. They don't have a heel strap and that's ok, I never saw the need for that anyway. My wife sees me wearing them and questions my sexuality. Her privileges have been suspended.

At Wal-mart today I noticed they had croc-like shoes for $9. Kids and adult sizes.
I also found, believe it or not, a Light My Fire spork at Wal-Mart. Guess they're carrying them now. It was $2.48

I'm posting to this thread again cause I saw it was brought up in another thread...
Anyway...my $6.00 jobbies have some miles on them now and are holding up great...the little foam ankle straps broke on one of them so i removed the rest and replaced the foam with a one inch strips of elastic webbing.
By adjusting the webbing for an exact fit for my foot I like these things even more now.
If anyone else has had the straps break a piece of elastic webbing works great..I just poked a hole through the webbing and tied them in to the existing holes...works great.

I was in a Payless shoe store last week. They have sandals made from the croc material with a toes protection box in the mens and boys shoes for about $20. I didn't get any because the male dino says I have enough shoes.... :D, but these looked like the ideal water crossing / camp / just getting a break from hiking footwear shoes for a long-distance hiker. Has anyone used these?

Still wearing my Dollar General knockoffs daily, they're comfy and hardly wearing at all.
I can't wear crocs. I end up looking like a stilt walker in clown shoes.

A few years ago before Crocs hit the campus scene and then became the dominant brand on trails, Waldies were the original foam shoe on the AT. I have no idea if they are better than what you can get for $6 now, but Waldies does have a new design it has named the "AT" in honor of all the early adopters of the first half of the decade.

I went to the local Dollar General again, in search of the bargain imitation Crocks. No luck.
They only had orange colored in children's sizes.
Perhaps it was a one time thing when they were available a few months ago??
Anyone else see them in stores currently?

We have them in TN. Maybe they are more popular in FL right now because it is warm enough for non-hikers to wear them?
TA DA!!!
At last, in Bear Lake , Michigan I found some crocks for sale in a Dollar General.
Today's color choices were "pretty pink" or "boy baby blanket blue" Ya takes what you can get.
I gotta say, these shoes are comfortable!!! Kind of bulky though. We'll make them fit. ( Does anyone know of an ultralight shoe horn??<G>)

Here in Thailand, we get them for about $5.00 or a little less depending on the exchange rate. BUT, a word of warning: These cheap crocs shrink if you store them in the sun. I couldn't believe it and thought maybe my feet were growing again as i've been training for a marathon here. But I noticed my friends wasn't wearing his anymore and asked him why and he said his shrank a lot. so, i don't know about your dollar general ones, but the cheap ones here are shrinking. (i only use them to play in the band as i don't find them cool enough in our hot climate here)
