I've been feeding my dog Waggin Train chicken jerky tenders from Wally World for the last year. Got to reading the bag and discovered the ingredients were 100% dehydrated chicken breast fillets with seasoning. No where on the bag is there a warning about human consumption. Couldn't resist the temptation so set up the alky range and boiled 1 cup of H2O with 4 "Jerky Tenders" in my Ti kettle. Reconstituted really well and 4 "Tenders" had absorbed most of the water after letting them set for 15 min. Took a tentative bite. Damn, they're good!! and 97% fat free to boot.

Comes in a 2 lb bag for $12.88. Go try to buy 2 lbs of any kind of Jerky for $13. OK, now tell me what I'm setting myself up for health wise. I can handle fleas or distemper but any thing worse might concern me.

I've heard kibbles 'n' bits is quite a tastey treat as well. Since you've moved on to dog food, you might want to try it out.... j/k

Sorry, Didn't mean to put it in general and I'm not able to delete either one. You can give me a "time out" when you see me on the trail. I thought folks in this forum might have a better knowledge base. If you have the ability to delete it here, please do. THNX!

No Belay, Be Careful here!! Does the package say "Human Grade" anywhere to describe the "treats"? :-? If not, you may want to reconsider. Meat that is used for pet foods does not have to be handled in the same manner as that for human consumption. It may also be from a less than desirable source. I'd stick with Purdue!

those chicken tenders have been irradiated-I believe, check closely. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but...some people might take issue with irradiated foods.

Yep. You generally see the raw materials on the highway in disreputable transfer trucks marked 'Not for Food' or a similar understatement.

Actually, you usually smell the trucks before you see them.

Parts is parts.

I have noticed my urine glowed in the dark after I consumed 1/2 a bag. Kinda nice. I don't have to turn the bathroom light on. Actually the treats aren't made up of pieces. They're truly fillet of chicken breast. I ate 4 pieces then quit. Haven't noticed any ill effects.

Well I have to go work out. Ralph and are are going down to chase cars on Maple Street.

Savor happy!

Thanks for the suggestion Blue Wolf. The Petsmart brand is a much better quality fillet with a subtle hickory smoke flavor. Seems more conducive to use in stews and casserole recipies though since it doesn't seem to rehydrate as fast. I'll cook you up a bowl full if we meet on the trail.

Haha though I can't say one way or another to eat them or not considering I use to eat dog biskets a child. Animals have stronger stomachs then us humans. And though It doesn't say that is or isn't fit for human conumption most likely the fillets are the rejects of the human market. But anyway if someone offered me one to try I would probably accept but that is just me.

On another note stay way from pupperoni though it may smell good it is some the of worst tasteing treats i've ever tried.... not saying i've tried alot of dog treats lol....

Oooppps!

"Also Monday, Eight In One Inc., a division of United Pet Group Inc., announced the unrelated recall of all Dingo brand Chick’n Jerky treats for dogs, cats and ferrets. The treats are being recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella, the company said. They were sold at Target, PetSmart and other stores." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17915607/

I think the product was recalled for salmonella contamination.

I really didn't need to know that. But seriously, I recall hearing that some kind of chicken jerky pet treat was recalled recently. I don't remember which brand.

Drinking a lot of grape Kool Aid will also give you green poop...without the
tummy cramps. (Amazing the things you remember from childhood.)

Aren't they supposed to be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees before eating? Do they taste like chicken or frog legs?:D

This is something a bit more serious than the rest of this thread. Hopefully, it doesn't apply to the original dog treats in question.

From the Missoulian, 22 Aug 07, p A5 "Wal-Mart: Tests show melamine in dog treats"
QUOTE - Tests of two Chinese brands of dog treats sold at Wal-Mart stores found traces of melamine...a spokesman said Tuesday. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. quietly stopped selling Chicken Jerky Strips ((emphasis mine)) from Import-Pingyang Pet Product Co. and Chicken Jerky ((ditto)) from Shanghai Bestro Trading in July, after customers said the products sickened their pets. ...customers who bought one of the products should return it to the nearest store for a refund.END QUOTE
