Well, this was supposed to be my send-off message but we are delayed in going to GA tomorrow. Paul Bunyan spiked a fever tonight and my hubby has a bad cough. Probably better too as March 1st is projected to be terrible weather anyway. And we will be with the whole AT crowd this weekend which PB will just love. :)
Anyway, just wanted to let you know.

So the take-off is postponed for now. :(

Sniff..gulp...sniff

Trail's not goin' anywhere, and in point of fact, you'll probably run into less bitter weather if you wait a bit. Lots of folks who start in late Feb. or early March spend tons of time in town because of weather, or have zero days in shelters which is never much fun. A lot of this can be avoided by simply waiting a week or two and starting later in March.

You'll be fine. Good luck and have a wonderful trip!

It would really stink if you all had come down sick your first week out.

All things work together for good....

Get well soon. I just got over 7 days of really bad flu. Trail will be waitin' on ya when ya get there. Good advice in this thread about waiting not being such a bad thing ;)

Rest, eat, sleep, and stay dry and warm.
Hit the trail when you're ready, it'll still be there!

You are taking it alot better than I would. I'm impressed :p

But then, the trail will be there when you are ready, so now you have a chance to worry about your gear some more. Just how many times can you take a piece of gear off your list & then put it back in/on before it becomes just silly?

If you want to feel a bit better about the delay: some of us have to wait 10 or more years, not just a few days (at least 12 for me). :datz

Thanks, everyone. I woke up today with the same head cold, so now I'm telling the other two guys (who now want to leave tomorrow 'cause their already well into their colds) that I need a few days.

The advice has been good and really appreciate it. :)

And for those who are waiting ten more years, been there done that, so know what you mean. :)

Hope you and Joshua are feeling better soon. As JT and others have noted, starting a bit later will likely save you from having as much bitterly cold weather to deal with. There might be something to that adage about all things working together for the good of them that love God :D.

Like other said, good choice and the trail will always be there. I was originally going to go SOBO last year, but had to postpone it to this year so I could finish up school. I orginally had plans to start mid March, but had to push it back to April 1st. Good things are worth the wait.

I bet you won't miss the rain tomorrow or the cold front comming in afterwords. Best of luck to the two of you when you do feel healthy enough to start your hike. We'll miss you in the meantime.

I'm hoping the boyfriend and I will be ok for the first part of the trail, the 14 hours of traveling from Alaska to the Hiker Hostel didn't treat us well. I especially am having troubles with tummy aches, and now not being able to sleep (hence the posting at three am). Sure would be nicer to deal with at home then on the trail. Still haven't decided whether to hike the approach trail, and make it a long day, or not, and to have a short easy day. The short easy day is looking more and more necessary.

Best of Luck,
Pink

Well, we were to start today but after looking at the wonderful radar in GA and all the rain, I think the sickness did become more of a benefit.

Maybe this weekend, though we are still not well at all yet....

You are making a smart desicion. Better to set yourself up for success, than failure. Easily said, but from what I read here and on TJ not everyone does this.

blissful - don't feel bad about the delay. It was truly a nasty day in the mountains yesterday. I had to run up to Mountains Crossings and it was a miserable drive, maybe I will get lucky and not have anydays like that that I must hike in...lol

You might want to consider banking a couple of weeks of Virginia before heading south. Just an idea. It might be easier and less costly to head out of the mountains to your own home if the weather gets ugly than spend several days hanging out in a motel.

Blissful & PB, I can't help but think God was looking out for you in all of this. The wind and rain in north GA have been extremely heavily in the past few days. The weather forecast for the region is now calling for sunny, mild days and cool (not frigid) nights.

Thank you SO much. Yeah, we were hoping to go Sunday, but P.B. is now coughing and won't eat anything today (which is not like him). At least his fever is gone, which is good. I'm borderline but okay. And my hubby is really tense b/c he wanted to do ten days with us due to his work schedule and now it's been whittled down each day. Well, not much you can do. :(

Well, I think we're gonna try to leave tomorrow for GA. Weather looks okay this week, we got a cabin at Neels Gap to rest after the week, etc. We plan to take is slower than first thought, which is good. Can enjoy it more too.

Thanks, everyone, for all your support and prayers. God bless.

A send-off hike from Amicalola Falls to Neel's Gap with friends or family is a great way to begin an A.T. journey. Have a wonderful time together.

Unable to stand being inside today, I decided to do something about it. I went on a "hike" that involved a drive-by of Conrad Weiser homestead, a crossing of Tulpehocken Creek by bridge and a glissade down to Kimmel Lookout. I'm looking forward to sitting there and chatting with you and that legendary lumberjack a few months from now.

After returning to the trailhead parking area, I interrupted BMECC's new 501 Shelter caretaker and kept him from his work entirely too long. I told him about your hike and to expect you. Before departing for other destinations on my "hike," I agreed to forward him the link to your journal so he too can follow your progress.

Blissful and PB are ill - the conditions on the trail last week would have been especially bad for them under the circumstances. BTW, God saved everyone starting last week from getting exposed to whatever Blissful and PB are now recovering from. Everybody won and all is well.

Congrats to you two. Hope we hear from you often as you hike.

::: said while nibbling on Steve's toes :::
Not everyone has the same needs. Some people, no doubt, gained a lot of confidence in themselves and their ability to complete the hike as a result of being out there. Some realized they needed to get better rain gear... some realized they just weren't cut out for this sort of thing and went on to conquer other goals. Steve, I understand that without faith it is impossible to believe that everyone gets what they need - do you understand that with faith it impossible not to believe it. We are looking at the world thru a different pair of eyes.

I thought ti was funny that little Cades Cove in GSMNP orignally had one Methodist and one Baptist church.

But there can never be any such thing as one Baptist church. The Baptist congregation got into a fight over doctrine and split, thus restoring balance to the universe and giving the Cove 3 churches.

I live near Cades Cove - there are more different kinds of Baptists here than I could begin to count. They get into a fight and half the congregation runs offf to start a new church... and then they both get into a fight and start a new church... they grow expotentially.

The lack of any sort of formal training needed to become a Baptist minister seems to promote this. If a man (they don't allow women) feels called to preach and the church agrees, they can be ordained. So when problems happen in the church, most ministers have no idea how to minister - they are simply preachers - not pastors.

There are two Muslim centers in Blacksburg. Why? They both believe different things. The Unitarian Church doesn't even pretend to unanimity. It's a diverse world in which we live. Hurray!
