View Full Version : Sleeping Pad for BIG Guy.....
Based on my budget of about $40 for a sleeping pad, I also have to consider that I weigh in at about 270 {Yes, that is without my pack!} I am looking at the Pacific Outdoors Line right now and I am considering the 1.5" self inflating or the 2.5" inflatable. Can anyone give me some direction on either of these, or suggest an alternative in my price range?

I got the Insulmat X-lite Thermo from campmor (2.5" inflatable). Very nice. I was around 230 when I got it. 210 now. ;)
Go for the Insulmat Max Thermo .... the 1.5 doesn't cut it for us big guys.
The 3/4 is on sale a few places and it's only 15 oz without stuff sack.

they make a larger thermarest ridgerest in blue/gray winter version. It's 25 inches versus 20 inches wide and 1/8th inch thicker than the green ridgerests. You can almost roll side to side without going off the pad--sidesleepers. the 20inch pad you'll have to do the hop flip in the middle of the night if you want to switch sides.
Unfortunately, you'll double the weight with it. If you do more shelter sleeping, it might be worth it. I went back to the 3/4 green and try to find more natural ground duff to sleep on.

I was 240 pounds before I lost a bunch of it this year. Couldn't get a decent night's sleep on a 1" pad due to pain in hips and shoulders. Switched to a Big Agnes Dual Core Insulated 2.5 inch and slept just like I was home in bed. There is no substitute for thickness in a sleeping pad!! In the winter I put a 1/8 inch thick piece of Gossamer Gear closed cell Evazote pad on top of the Big Agnes. In mild weather the closed cell pad is not necessary at all. The Big Agnes is a little over your budget, but excellent choice. To stay in your budget go with the thicker pad, weight might be the tradeoff for the lower cost.

I use a pad from the Big Agnes Air Core Insulated line (2.5" thick) (http://www.bigagnes.com/str_pads.php?id=ia). While I'm not 270 lbs, I have broken my hip in the past and need the extra padding to be able to sleep. This pad has to be manually inflated every night, but it is so worth it for the comfort it provides.
If inflatables concern you, you might want to consider 2 WalMart closed cell blue pads - cheap, warm and light, but bulky
I am going to go with an inflatable. Since the Pacific Outdoors 2.5" inflatable is on sale at Campmor for <$35, I am going to give it a try. I do not mind blowing the thing up if it keeps my hip from digging into the ground.
Thanks for all the help!

Okay, okay, you know my secret....(diet, exercise, and a good sleeping mat) now PAY UP! :D
I ended up with the POE 2.5" inflatable from Campmor. I took a nice nap on it yesterday afternoon, and it fits the bill nicely. Only takes 12-14 breaths to blow it up, so I am quite happy with it.
Thanks for the info. It helped me make a good choice. :banana

I find that in the middle of the night I sometimes let air out of it, and it gets firmer from body heat warming the air inside. I like to have it just firm enough to keep my hip from touching the ground. That way i get maximum deflection and use all of those 2.5 inches.
