View Full Version : transportation to and from trail?
Hey,
My friends and I want to do the notch in June. We live in Connecticut and were wondering what would you guys suggest is the best way to get to and from there. And by doing the "notch" i mean, starting at the beginning of it, then hiking from that point on for about 7 days, probably into NH.
SHould we bring two cars, park one at the beginning one at the end, then drive up and get the other car at the beginning when we are done? Just take one car, park at the end, and try to get shuttled the the beginning? Also, do you know of any other possibilites for transportation? ANy suggestions would be great!
Thanks,
-Eric

7 days of hiking south from Grafton Notch (fee parking lot) will take you well into NH.
Your problem is getting from point A to Point B. Grafton Notch by car where you start is a long trip from say Crawford Notch where you might want to wind up or even Pinkham Notch. So if you have one car, thisd is a thought that would save you considerable driving time. Why not do Mahoosuc Notch as a dayhike circular with one car? Drive up Success Pond Road to Notch Trailhead (end of hike). Hike up Speck Pond trail to mahoosuc trail. Left turn at Speck Pond, Hike south thru the Notch and then go back out on the Notch Trail to your car. Next day hitch a ride from Hikers Paradise with some other hikers to the AT east of Gorham (or start out on Carter-Moriah Trail right out of Gorham to AT south). Then hike the AT south to Pinkham Notch, go up Boott Spur trail to Davis Path south. Then bag Isolation and go down the Isolation trail and with a few short stretches on several trails head up to Neimann Campsite at Mizpah. Next follow the AT north to Mt. Madison. Then down the Link trail back to Gorham.
This means:
Day 1: Travel to Gorham
Day 2: Hike the Mahoosuc Notch Loop
Day 3: Hike Carter-Moriah trail to Imp Shelter
Day 4: Hike to Carter Notch
Day 5: Hike to Pinkham Notch
Day 6: Hike to Niemann Campsite
Day 7: Hike to Crag Camp
Day 8: Hike out to Gorham via Mt. Madison
Day 9: Drive Home
Consult White Mountain Guide for mileages. This answers several of your other threads as well!

When did they start charging a fee to park in Grafton Notch? I thought it was free. I parked there for 4 days in September of 2004 and never paid a dime.
There is a pipe canister and envelopes are provided at the kiosk at the parking lot and I paid in 2002. I believe it is $2 per day. Here is the state park website and under operation it says fee:http://www.maine.gov/cgi-bin/doc/parks/find_one_name.pl?park_id=1 So yes you are supposed to pay.
