So, fellow Whiteblazers, I just got off the phone with a very nice woman from Hennessy Hammock. She was so accomadating. Anyway, I ordered a Ultralite Backpacker A-Sym after much contemplation over that or the new Hyperlite. I figured for an additional $50 it was not worth it for a that half a pound less.

I AM SO EXCITED!

It will be coming with me on my Crew's section hike through Massachusetts in April.

What type of bottom insulation are you using? It's still going to be cool to cold at night in April.

Unsure as of right now.

I usually sleep with my down bag, a skull cap, and under armor on chilly nights.

Could you experts help me out on what I should experiment with?
I will be going out every weekend between now and April to test it.

I bought a Hennessey Expedition Asym a couple of years ago. I really like it except for one thing. The rain fly is just barely big enough. They've come out with a bigger fly since then. You may want to check with them and see if yours has the bigger fly or not. Mine kept me dry during a weeklong and very rainy trip, but only because there wasn't much wind.

Oh I have a HH and it is wonderful. You can say goodbye to roots, and rocks and hard ground. Really versatle too. You will find really, really neat places to hang it. -SunnyWalker

I wish I knew about hammock camping when I was 16. And the current hammocks were available also.

I've never enjoyed camping out so much as I have these past couple years since the HH became my preferred method. I've hung over rocks, cliffs, water, snow, mud, and other people....on a groundcloth under me. I know the stock fly was small, so saved my money and purchased a OES MacCat deluxe fly. Brain from OES makes a great product. Since then I've added gear bags, fly tensioners, and quick adjust straps and carabiners. As far as padding in cold weather, I've had great success with CCF pad cover with "Neatsheet" material. Just the right anount of "slip" when using a sleeping bag. Welcome to the hanging crowd and happy trails.

I will definately check out the archives and that site.
And yeah, I am 16, highlyl involved with scouting recently. We have logged about 500 miles? maaybe on the AT.
I have seen quite a few thru hikers withthe hammocks, and I needed to jump on the bandwagon.
And haha, she was very nice. I was surprised.

I hope I like it.

HAHAHA! you are all so witty.

I am thinking about ordering a larger tarp and the underquilt system. Can't wait!

I wouldn't want everybody to get into hammock camping. ;) I have found that while I am snug and comfy in my hammock, my buddies who are sleeping on the ground are up early in the morning, because they are so uncomfortable, making a fire and making coffee. It's better for me that way.

I have the exact hammock you ordered. 2 things to consider are: larger fly and insulation. 3 options for insulation (in my mind): Hennessy under/over pad, or the overquilt from something like JacksRbetter, or some concoction of your own. Frankly, after being warm and highly uncomfortable in my own design (in a Canadian spring) I am going for the overquilt design - it is worth the money in the long run.

Have fun, stay dry and warm, and keep your head up!
