Looks like it is going to be great hiking weather for the next 10 days.
This seems to good to be true.

Darn Fannypack, why did ya have to go and do this?

I'm jonesing REAL bad to get to the Trail, any part, by myself or with someone, early or late, light or dark, short or long, hot or cold, dry or wet, roots or rocks, tent or hammock, bleach or iodine, outside frame or ultra......

That is a near perfect forecast.

I will think of the many that are starting that week.

Well, you're going to have to knock about 10 degrees off the low temperature forecast for hiking at elevation. But that said, I'll be out there next week and I CAN'T WAIT.

I spent this past weekend (Mar 2-4) on the trail around Springer. Saturday night it got down into the teens with a wind that sounded like a jet engine sitting in the top of the trees. I was going to tent near the Springer shelter but it was way too windy for me so I hauled myself down to Three Forks, about a 1000 feel less altitude and a lot less wind. My water bottles froze almost solid. In the valley it wasn't nearly as windy or cold. Before noon there was quite a bit of ice on the section of trail from the FS 42 parking lot up to Springer, took a bit of a tumble on what I thought was a wet rock that turned out to be an icy rock. It wasn't bad while walking, but once you stopped it got chilly very quickly.

Sunday morning our themometer said 18 degrees at 7 am and we are 2200 ft. Here in Hiawassee burr...it is still windy outside.

This is a very bad thread for me. As I am having a severe case of Springer Fever. I am currenly contemplating a thru-hike this year. I was laid off in January and am collecting unemployment which makes a thru possible. But I have so many obligations here at home that it is a very tough decision to just up and leave for 6 months. But you never know I have done it in the past (2001). We'll see. Either way I will be on the trail either with a thru or a section this year. Hope to see you out there.

Man oh man.... I will be up on Springer the 11th with a start on the 12th - looks like some super hiking and sleeping weather - even with the 10° difference. :) Thanks for posting this!

Don't be fooled by these optimistic numbers! Saturday morning there were some other hikers setting off at the same time we did, but in a different direction. They were wearing shorts. Sunday morning, when it was 20 degrees and windy and all our water bottles were frozen, I was hoping they had brought some warmer clothing with them.

I was hammock camping Saturday night at Stover Creek. The big spot to the left after you cross the bridge. The winds were pretty rough.

Thank goodness! It's snowing here in Frederick MD. We just spent the last several months living in Montreal Canada - sick sick sick sick of snow and cold! We start on the 15th at the top of Springer. New to this site - - we're Boomer and Mrs Baggins, 51 yrs old, and ready to go!

Beware the Easter Suprise! Seems like there is a cold front every year about that time.

Saturday (3/3/07) 3 of us did Woody Gap to Neels Gap and back, crossing Blood twice (hike, run, hike, run). We all had shorts on and 2 thin polypro shirts. We started early with gloves and ear wraps but had those off in 45 minutes. The wind going up Blood Mtn. forced us to put back on some stuff we took off.

It was just about the nicest it can get for hiking. There were lots of people on the trail (almost ridiculous). Several thru hikers came by and as usual, many struggling with heavy gear.

Sunday, we did a much easier trek off the AT in the area and it was considerably colder with ice in places.

This is really about as good as it gets with the dry weather, no snow or ice, no bugs, and cool dry breezezs. When you are hiking with gear you want it cool.

Congrats on doing the thru this year. My wife and I may be up on Springer Sunday around mid day. I'll be looking for you to give you a good sendoff.

You should have come on down a few hundred yards. The winds howled in the tree tops but we were pretty protected by the rhododendron and just plain being down as much as you can get in Three Forks. As soon as I started walking out Sunday morning the wind hit me and I was glad I slept where I did.

That's the spot I was originally looking for. I had camped there 6 years ago. Spot to the left right before the bridge where the 3 forks meet.

Now I am glad I had to push back my start date a month for foot surgery. I just moved out of New England and I am so sick of the cold. I think by my April 5th start spring time will finally have a toe hold on Springer.
