Just got my HH today - Exped Asym - I set it up 12 feet apart on the steel support poles in our basement, but I have several questions.

1. Am I supposed to lie diagonal in the hammock? If so, does anyone ever worry about tipping over? Is this what Asym means or am I supposed to lie along the bottom weight bearing line from head to toe? I am confused...

2. Leap of faith to sit down in that small space, but I did it... any tips for getting out? Do I just sit forward (grab the bottom material after my feet go out), and pull myself up to a sitting position?

3. How do people sit sideways on it - I can't figure it out because the mesh gets in the way...

4. does head go higher than feet or should they be at the same level?

Thansk so much

Welcome to the hammock mafia:D
I have 3 Hennessy hammocks and I love them.

Yes, you are supposed to lie on the diagonal. It will allow you to sleep much more flat and comfortable. Dont worry about tipping over. I hav'nt heard that happening in a Hennessy yet but there's a first time for everything.
The Asym is referring to the shape of the hammock.
Getting out is easy. Just reach out with your hand and undo the velco slit.
Check this out for using as a chair:
www.hennessyhammock.com/use-as-a-chair.htm

I like to hang my foot end slightly higher than the head end. Kinda goes against how you might think, but seems to be a popular way to hang.

Check out www.hammockforums.net for geat hammock info. from a buch of hammock fanatics.:banana

you've got a defective hammock and you must mail it to me now...I'm doing a study on defective hammocks, if you send it 2 day business you may help me save lives! If I can remedy the mesh I'll give you a pitance for your efforts but rest assured you've helped me rest well!

Yes. Laying on the diagonal give you the flattest place to lay. In mine I lay with my head on the left and feet to the right of center. You won't tip over, or at least I never did. I even rolled around a lot. If you are worried keep your knife in there with you and make it a top loader if you roll.:p

2. Leap of faith to sit down in that small space, but I did it... any tips for getting out? Do I just sit forward (grab the bottom material after my feet go out), and pull myself up to a sitting position?

Pretty much. I would just sit on the edge and swing my body out. It is best to pitch it so that your feet just touch the ground.

3. How do people sit sideways on it - I can't figure it out because the mesh gets in the way...

If you do not use the side tieouts you can pull the material to one side and sit or lay on it. Some people have cut and put a biner onto their ridge line. That way it can be removed giving a place to sit without the ridgeline getting in the way.

4. does head go higher than feet or should they be at the same level?

I hung my HH and now my homemade one with the foot end about a foot or so higher than my head. I also put my colthes bag under my knees. Feels good to me. YMMV

No problem. Check out hammockforms. A lot more hammock talk going on there.

The way I have found to make getting out easier is to push your feet through the slit, set up and grad a bunch of the fabric just above the far end of the slit and pull yourself up into a standing position. Bend over and step out of the hammock.

OK, So I am a little bolder tonight. I am more comfortable getting in it in that it won't rip out on me or dump me on the cold hard concrete floor.
I also tried my head to the left and feet to the right of Center, but I think I prefer head left and feet right of center - I see how I can lie flat......
Does it matter which side your head is on/feet are on?

I also discovered that I could move around a little and it won't dump me out.
I am working on trying to roll on my side.
Does anyone sleep comfortable on their side and/or stomach?

finally it is about 50 in the basement and I got cold pretty quick after a 10 minute hanging, so I will need to play around with my sleeping bag and perhaps even a bit of reflectix for a light pad.

The nice thing is that if I get tired from trying to get warm and comfortable, I can just fall asleep...

not overly but the tieouts for the HH favor the head left / feet right orientation - if you don't use the tieouts I don't think it matters much - the first HH I had (2000 Safari Deluxe) I slept the other way for the first 10-20 nights

side sleeping is fairly common and easy to range from full side to partial to on ones back - stomach sleeping is generally difficult but might be possible if one is rather flexible - me I got used to sleeping on my back - this was mainly due to my choice of bottomside insulation - 20 inch wide mats.

go to wlamart and get one of the blue closed cell pads, trim the left corner by the head end and the right corner by the foot end - cheap and works reasonable well for a beginning setup.

The Speer SPE works great with pads in your hammock:www.speerhammocks.com/Products/SPE.htm Depending on the expected temperatues, I will use 1-3 pads. I use the Wal-Mart pad mentioned above. Cut off 6 inch triangles on all four corners. This helps the pad(s) conform to the hammock environment better. I use my Thermarest Ridgerest on top as it is more comfortable. I also have the JRB No Sniveller and Nest.
This gives me multiple options.

Yes it does matter which side you lay on in reference to center. The head goes on the left and the feet to the right of center. The HH's are shapped that way though the way that they are rolled on the ends, the way the bugnet is shaped, and where tieouts are.

There is a thread on HF where we are making homemade versions. Someone completly took these apart and posted pics along the way if you are interested in seeing more.

Try both for yourself. In the end sleep which ever way feels the best.

I use my $5 ccp from walmart and am fine without any extra length as long as I am using an underquilt. The pad only comes out in temps below 20 deg.

Re: which side to lay on - the others are right about putting your body on the side with the tie-outs...those sides have more room since they're pulled out.

But I also heard about a guy who sleeps with his head at the foot end. I'd be scared to fall out during the night if I rolled over or something, but apparently he liked being able to reach his gear through the opening.

4: Head to feet is your preference. I prefer feet higher while awake. While Asleep I forget my master and pretend I am in a tent.

3: Mesh getting in the way? Stop feeling like you are on a honey moon and try simply sitting on it sideways. I like to spread the mesh as far away my wieght as possible while laying/sitting on it sideways. Even so, I feel a bit alarmed while sitting on the outside of this hammock.

2: Sit forward and simply bring your legs to the ground. Carefull of you master. the seams may rip beyond its sewened seems some day so be carefull. If you are getting out in very cold weather, and are using an underquilt and a storm shelter, you need an answer from someone other than myself.

1: The hammock design seems to be best used if you lay diagonly. You will lay flatter that way. otherwise be prepared wake up in supreme fetus postion. If that is what you like, that is cool, just dont allow your freinds to catch you sucking your thumb at 6am.

lol part of it is learning to truck in the hammock .

come one man. telling people to trust the hammock. this is crap ideals.

Here is a better ideal.

Try a hammock. trust yourself. Get some ideas of what to expect. Try it out yourself. Be very concerned about what you require.

or trust a piece of nylon.

*** that was most stupid thing I have ever heard in my life time. 'Trust the hammock.'

what the hell are your mommas feeding you?

Hey Trollcoda - if you don't like the hammock, don't use it. If you don't like what it takes to stay warm in a hammock, don't use it when it's cold. Pretty simple to keep yourself happy that way.

Or you can pretend like, just b/c you can't figure it out, nobody else can either. Then you can bitch and moan on the internet and make yourself feel important.

Yep, just kick your head to the left side and enjoy.

2. Leap of faith to sit down in that small space, but I did it... any tips for getting out? Do I just sit forward (grab the bottom material after my feet go out), and pull myself up to a sitting position?
I just put my feet against the velcro, press a little and I'm out.

3. How do people sit sideways on it - I can't figure it out because the mesh gets in the way...
Dunno, never tried..

4. does head go higher than feet or should they be at the same level?
I always started with my feet higher than my head to take away the throbbing. Eventually I always end up about even.

I guess he just cant relate to someone feeling a bit nervous using a hammock. After all, there is no real reason to doubt that the sheer fabric and tiny little strings that hennessy uses will safely suspend us and not drop our carcass to the ground in the middle of the night.... is there?

(Psst.... is there a phobia that covers the fear of falling from a hammock?)
