Dr Bronners (sp?) soap has long been touted as being available for use for just about any purpose, even mouth wash, as I vaguely recall, though I doubt many would be foolish enough to try putting any soap into their mouth more than once.
I have found that any bar of soap is considerably longer lasting (so, lighter) than any liquid and is much easier to carry. Ivory is a fairly unobtrusive one without much of a perfume smell and you can just carry it in a baggy.
I don't know about mouth wash but if you are inquiring about toothpaste, you could consider a tiny vial of baking soda that cleans and refreshes your mouth. Add some salt to it if you prefer more of an abrasive cleaning.
A combination of any of these will be much cheaper than whatever that REI product was, plus it should prove easier to replenish once used up on a long distance hike somewhere.

Wash your mouth out with soap?Yup,mama used to do that to me
when I used the "bad words"-maybe a couple of times-but it had to
be Octagon brand soap which was about the highest lye content and
therefore the most offensive you could encounter as a "mouthcleaner".
As for baking soda-my grandmother used it with salt for almost 94 years
and died with all of her teeth and no fillings.Salt and soda works and it is
in my pack. Also lightweight and nobody can sqeeze the "tube" in
the middle.:D

I remember reading something, probably here on WB or maybe TJ, a while back. A person was listing lessons learned on an overnite hiking trip and the best one was: Just because you can use Dr. Bronner's as toothpaste, doesn't mean you should.

thanks for the info im trying to consolidate as many jobs to one item as i can, taking one that can be used for many things instead of somthing that only be taken for one, i was pretty sure that soap used as mouth wash would taste rather soapy, but im new to the whole idea of backpacking/longdistance hiking. so i figured it would be more stupid to ask a question i wasnt sure about than to buy the stuff and try it my self, if just to save my self an unpleasant experiance. Thanks again

:-? More supid to ask then try it your self??????? HMMM so by that logic most of us are trying to be more stupid everytime we ask our fellow hikers for advice. Yea that works depending on who we are asking:D

While on the trail I used to try to wash my mouth out every night with a bit of 100-proof bourbon diluted with a little water. I'm not sure of the environmental impact of discharging water and bourbon on the ground. But to be safe, I would just swallow the water and bourbon mixture.

Our mothers must have gone to the same "how to be a mother school". Mine used a bar of "Fels Naptha". I learned FAST !!

I use Dr. Bonner's in the woods.
I wouldn't soak down my toothbrush with it. I leave that to a small tube of Crest. But I will tell you that a single drop on my finger and then rubbed on my front teeth leaves your mouth feeling a whole lot fresher. Didn't taste really soapy just different.

Weary,
That statement was beautiful!! Makes me laugh thinking about it :D
I have always had luck with the "brush ups" or little things you put on your finger to cut the dirt off the teeth. May have to try the toothpaste called "bourbon"...
