Ok, so after finishing the AT at Katahdin, say I decide I want to hike home to Denver, CO. What route would you suggest?
Here's the criteria I'm looking for:
1. Minimize road walking, cities, etc...
2. Maximize scenery, vistas, unique environments, flora, fauna, etc...
3. AVOID!!!! Nebraska and Kansas!!!
I haven't really researched this idea. I know it will probably involve linking up to the CDT at some point to get me back to Denver but not really sure of the in between.
Any ideas?
Hike back to VT link up with the North Country Trail to the CDT south to CO. Of course, it would be practically impossible after the AT, as it would be too late in the season.

Actually I'd be cheating a little bit. I would be starting at DWG, where I got off the AT in `06. I'd be starting in May so I should have plenty of time.
The North Country Trail runs from VT to the CDT?

No, starts somewhere in NY and ends in the Dakotas. You'd have to road walk and/or find alternates trails most of those sections, the last being 500 miles.
Andrew Skurka hiked the C2C which would be your main northern route.

A more direct route would be to hook up with the American Discovery Trail in Ohio, but that goes through Kansas and has lots of road walking.

I thought about the ADT but like you said, lot of road walk and it goes through Kansas/Nebraska. No offense to anyone but I've aldready discovered All I want about the plains of the US of A.
I was thinking/hoping there would be a series of trails I could link together to avoid those things for the most part.
I'm gonna start researching but still hoping for some more input. I gotta a year to plan.
Looking at Andy's page he seemed to do quite a bit of cross country through eastern MT and maybe not so much road walking.
This year he's doing the Great Western Loop, hiking most of the PCT and CDT connecting them via the PNT, AZT and GET.

You could do a hiking/kayaking trip back... if you enjoy kayaking. :-?
