I'm in the process of getting ready for long trail hiking again, and I want to lose a fairly significant amount of weight between now and then. I think if I had a 'weight loss buddy' it might help both of us. If anyone is interested, a PM would be a good way to start off.

I'm your Huckleberry. I gained a significant amount of weight ( not a hard thing for me) over the past 2 months as I was imobilized with herniated disc. Had the surgery nad it was a huge success. Never the less 2 months of inactivity really hurt including putting a huge dent in my stmina .
On the bright note I am over 5 weeks of not smoking after a 35 year addiction.

A huge congrats on the smoking cessation. Great job!! It does get easier as time goes on. 6 years for me after a two pack a day addiction for 25 years. Keep it up!!

I could use a weight loss buddy too. Gained 10 pounds over the holidays with my broken foot. I'll never be able to climb now.....:o

I may have started this thread, but it hardly belongs to me. Anyone who wants to ask anyone else to do this too is free to.

Weasel, why not start a weight loss thread - as sort of group accountability / encouragement kind of thing? That way, if someone chooses to begin participating later or to quit participating, it won't dramatically affect others programs and support system. I'd be up for something like that. I'm currently on a low-cal / low saturated fat diet and have lost about 12 lbs. I've also started doing aerobics 5 days a week (with the ladies on Lifetime network in the mornings) and am walking the .7 miles around our hilly neighborhood (without my cane!!!!) I've lost a lot of inches since I started this about 4 wks ago and am able to get into some clothing I haven't worn in a while :D

Great news on the weight loss, FD. One thing that helped me was to give away the sizes I lost down from. That way, I wasn't subconsciously telling myself that I might need them again someday.

Mowgli started a popular thread about this a while back. I think they had good results.http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9139:sun

Tell me more about what a thread like that should look like?

I appreciate the love about smoking. I think it is important for me to see myself as not quiting rather just a guy who, by the grace of God, has not smoked today. They say it gets easier but right now I find myself fighting it minute by minute.
Anyhoo, as far as a thread goes I would see it as a place for sharing positive things we have done for ourselves such as I walked x number of miles today, or I was able to keep my caloric intake to an average of X per day this week. When I feel like a binge coming on I have found so and so to be helpful to fight the temptation.
I want to hike so and so and it will be a better hike if I was carrying less weight.
Things like this I suppose.

Would some one give us a white chip after 30 days?

Wow, this must be a sign.

My boss sent out an office-wide email today looking for anyone interested in doing something akin to "The Biggest Loser".

There's 18 of us and we're breaking into 3 groups and competing for the biggest %age lost over 8 weeks. As soon as I find out who's on my team, I'm going to let them in on how many calories backpacking burns. :banana

Sounds like a positive move for everyone, and congrats on quitting smoking!

The place I play tennis at started a contest for us as individuals, not teams, and called it The Biggest Loser. Last Saturday was 2 months for me and I am down 34 pounds and 6 inches off of my waist. 18 pounds to reach my "ideal weight" as defined by the fitness trainer using a calculator and some charts. No fatty foods, no fried foods, no beer or carbonated drinks and either playing 2 hours of tennis or working out an hour for 6 days per week.

I went backpacking last week and it felt GREAT. I no longer had to stop and take a break halfway up each mountain. I barely broke stride going up the steep hills.

Having the support and encouragement of others is very important.

A year ago I was pushing 230 and a playstation contoller. Cutting the above foods and definitly the soda along with replacing the PS2 with a punching bag, hiking boots, and playing hockey - I hit 165 at my best. Unfortunately the holidays got me back up to 185ish and the corned beef for St. Patty's wont help but I feel better having the extra 50 lbs on my back than under my skin. Oh yeah.... No booze either

Great to hear the success stories!

My problem was the appetite didn't go away when I got off the trail. So, now I've got even more motivation to reverse the process.

Wow great thread! Ok let me try. I was 6ft1 190lb gree fighting machine when I got out of the army. I am now a 220lb mean doughnut killer trying to get back to my former self. Wow that felt good to be honest about my fat self. Anyway good luck to all my fellow pound shredders.

Just checking in - have been sweating with the ladies every weekday morning and walking around the block without my cane. My weight is down another 1.5 lbs and my boot-tay is down a whopping 3"! My waist is down 2.5 now and my mountains :D are down an inch. I'm getting into clothes I haven't been able to wear in a while.

Welcom Schulo. If this fat old lady can do it, so can you.

WTG Lilred. 6 lbs is a lot of weight you won't be carrying on your section.

Show Me, get back on track.

Weasel, glad you are with us. You can do this. I have faith in you.

I'll throw my hat in the ring as well. Two years ago I was a 200-pound, competitive volleyball player and submission grappler.

After several injuries, one major surgery and a serious battle with depression I'm now at about 310 pounds. I plan to lose about ten pounds before I start my thru on April 15th and then another 90+/- during the hike.

For me, it's not about seeing my abs again (though I wouldn't complain) but getting my body back into decent enough shape that I can begin competitive training again. At 32, I have a few more years in my respective sports and finally decided to not waste them sitting on the couch.

PS - I've also noticed that since I got fat, I had to rely totally on my personality to get a date -- and that has been a disaster!!! :-)

Still sweating with the ladies 30 minutes every weekday morning and walking afterward. Had to walk inside today as the outside temps are quite cold. For an inside mile, I do 2,300 steps as a mile with 20% being up / down on my step stool.

I've dropped 2 pounds this week and lost another 1/2 inch off my buns, 1 " off my waist and gained 1/2" in the girls????? Maybe the girls have just gotten more 'perky'????? I am now able to wear regular women's sizes again instead of plus sizes (except for tops that button - they pop open ) I can get into my size 18 jeans, but they are still pretty tight.

My bride and I joined weight watchers last week, actualy my wife goes to the meetings and preps all the food. My part is eating what she cooks;) and only that. Seems like a good plan we can do TOGETHER.
After my back surgery I have gotten back up to walking 2 miles. I find that I am really struggling as when I walk I start having muscles spasms in my lumbar, buttock, and thigh areas. My doc tells me this will eventually go away I just have to live through it. Back is great its just re-training these lazy muscles.

I have time blocked out for a 2 week section at the end of May beginning of June. I sure hope I can get into some sort of trail readiness by then as I would sure hate to miss an oppurtunity to hit the trail.

Cannonball, WTG re: starting a diet plan and the walking! It does take a while to get muscles back in shape after inactivity due to surgery. I did it - so can you. What section are you planning to hike?

Thank you for the assurance. My wife says the same thing but patience is a virtue I am not long on:rolleyes: .
As far as section, I wanted to do Springer to NC border but I know I won't be able to handle that type of terrain this spring.
My other though was between Erwin and Damascus. I have a friend who recently moved to Johnson City , TN and she wouldshuttle me in that area.
Could you offer any info as to what the terrain is like as far as difficult in that roughly 115 mile stretch.

P.s. allready done SNP to any one who would suggest that. It was a great hike but I am really trying to get on "vigin trail" to me.

I didn't find that section as difficult as GA several years ago, but I haven't hiked it recently. It goes over several good-size mountains, but was well graded. It also goes along the property lines of some houses in several places so you could make a call if you needed. There are some spectacular views - the 360 degree view from grassy ridge comes to mind immediately.

Thanks FD, I new the elev. was high but I wondered about the hard and seeming endless up and downs like in Ga. Are there not Balds in this section. The fact that there are "bail out options" along the way makes it attractive to me this spring.
I can walk around Tallahassee area with a pack on all day long but as you know its no simulation of the trail.
