View Full Version : A little shelter tip :-) Madmax 03-13-2007, 21:40 Just in case anyone would like to know, the innertent of the Eureka Spitfire Solo, 19 oz, not exately SUL, but it fits right under the Sixmoondesigs Gatewoodcape 11 oz :-? Max mike! 03-14-2007, 01:50 oh wow, thats a very nice fit...hmmm a very nice fit indeed :D mike! Frolicking Dinosaurs 03-14-2007, 05:47 Hmmmm... tent + raingear at 30 ozs. While it isn't a set-up I'd want to use on trails that get a lot of rain (like the AT), it would be ideal for trails with less rain. Madmax 03-14-2007, 19:24 It's a lot of fun, I promise. With an additional pole up the hood, it even vents well :-? Max stuco 03-14-2007, 20:26 Is it the regular spitfire of the spitfire UL? That's a good idea, I want a gatewood cape and already have a spitfire. HMM Madmax 03-15-2007, 06:03 I got the Spitfire Solo since the UL didn't get so nice reviews, but the inners may be much the same I think. Go for the Cape, it's nice, even though better as tarp then as raingear :-) I have chosen it for lang distance walking. Max ============================== Do the walls of the cape touch the walls of the Spitfire ? ...and how many stakes does it take for the dual set-up ?? 'Slogger vaporjourney 03-15-2007, 08:12 I would never use both the Spitfire (which I have) and the Cape. However, it is nice to really know the dimensions of the interior of the Cape. The Solitaire's room inside was fine to me, and now my TarpTent Rainbow feels like a mansion with unnecessary space. If I ever switch to the Cape, it'll be nice to know that it is big enough for me. Footslogger 03-15-2007, 08:18 [quote=vaporjourney;339359]I would never use both the Spitfire (which I have) and the Cape. ======================================= Agree with you there ...plus Ron (Six Moon Designs) has announced the Wild Oasis, which is essentially the Gatewood Cape without the hood AND mesh along the bottom edges for ventillation. 'Sloggr Sly 03-15-2007, 08:28 Agree with you there ...plus Ron (Six Moon Designs) has announced the Wild Oasis, which is essentially the Gatewood Cape without the hood AND mesh along the bottom edges for ventillation. I thought the mesh was for bugs.... without it you'd still have ventilation. Footslogger 03-15-2007, 08:31 I thought the mesh was for bugs.... without it you'd still have ventilation. ===================================== Yeah ...you're probably correct there. Too early for me - no coffee yet. Just thinking that combined with the apex vent it would improve air movement inside the Oasis. But I guess the primary purpose of the mesh is bug control. 'Slogger Madmax 03-15-2007, 18:16 Hi there. With the Spitfire Solo I found a real good value summer tent, and with the Cape a very, very, very nice "just in case" tent/shelter. Going with the Cape often, if not allways, forces me also to bring a groundclouth of a few oz, wich I would with the Oasis ? Combining the Solo inner and Cape gives me a full bathtop and mesh inner for a relatively modest weight. Furthermore, in warmer nights the Solo inner sets up as a standalone comfortable option. It's just easy and comfetable to use the Spifire inner under the Cape, wich it will touch in the 2 corners where fixed with the same stakes that holds the cape. But as said, it's full bathtop so I don't bother about that little touch. The hole combined "thing" :D sets up with 6 stakes + optional guyoutpionts outsite the cape. So all in all, one must calculate the different weights of the parts, the number of sleeping options and hold it up to the hiking season/conditions. I don't think it's for the compleate unexperienced hiker to go tarp-like in problematic weather. At least one have to be able remembering how it REALLY is to freeze and shake from bringing the wrong equipment on an earlyer trip :-? Personally I would newer camp in very cold places with the risk of snowstorms in a tarptent unless sleeping in watertight heavyweight 850+ down bag, and then maybe even not. I too find the Oasis as a beautiful new option on the marked, another "Winner" from Ron, who offers the most excelent custmerservice I've ever experienced anywhere. Thanks for that ! Happy trails, Max Madmax 04-09-2007, 20:39 Just about leaving for 4000 miles, following the E1+2+3 from Sweden to Spain, me and my 8 Lbs pack :-) http://www.era-ewv-ferp.com/index.php?page_id=29 Happy trails to everyone ! Max Madmax 07-23-2007, 23:21 Try a hooped tentpole under the cape, so we're talking business, oceans of space ! Unfortunately the picture is to big for posting here. Never got used to the cape as raingear in strong winds, but as shelter I love it ! socalhiker 07-25-2007, 23:24 So Max, substituting the cape for the stock rain fly reduces the weight significantly?? The UL weighs 2.4 and your set-up is under 2 pounds? I have been shopping the boards for the Wild Oasis but a Cape + the regular Spitfire would be weight worthy and make economic sense. Now I am thinking on pulling back on the Wild Oasis and considering seriously your set-up. Are you recommending this based on your experience. The weight would grow from 14 oz for the WO to about 29 oz for the Spitfire/Cape based on your info. Is this correct? JAK 07-25-2007, 23:31 Madmax, Cool map of Europeans trails. Thanks. I would like to do that Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage someday. Not sure why. Does it matter? Madmax 07-28-2007, 17:58 Madmax, Cool map of Europeans trails. Thanks. No, of course it doesn't matter why :sun Dances with Mice 07-28-2007, 19:17 Madmax, Cool map of Europeans trails. Yeah. That portion from Ireland to Wales looks interesting too. The Celtic Sea must be a lot shallower than I imagined. |
