So I did the math on thefatmanwalking (thread is http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=12352)

He walked 600 miles in two months and GAINED 53 pounds doing so. That works out to him having consumed an average of 7,500 calories per day. He admits that he bypassed grocery stores and ate almost exclusively convenience stores.

Got me thinking...what could be piled on the counter if you went into the average gas station and selected 7,500 calories worth of food?

30 Snickers bars at 250 cals apiece?
5 boxes of pop tarts at 1,500 cals per box?
2 boxes of little debbies at 3,500 cals per box?
20 of those "2 for a dollar" gas station hot dogs?

I suspect he gets a lot of "magic", including home cooking and people picking up his check in restaurants.

But if your daily diet consistes of fried chicken, burgers, chili dogs, cheese fries, sausage biscuits, buckets of soda pop, milkshakes, etc., it's really not that heard to take in that many calories, especially if you're eating at these places 3 or 4 times a day.

Plus, most road-walking is pretty much flat. There's simply no way the guy would be experiencing thruhiker-type weight loss, especially when one considers his diet.

He may well finish the trip in worse shape than he started.

I guess what I find hard to understand is this gluttony after announcing that his #1 reason for the walk was to lose weight. A person gaining a pound a day is cramming an extra 3500 calories into their mouth every day. That's not just an occasional overindulgence, a guiltily sneaked candy bar...that's the amount of calories in SEVEN Big Macs or FOURTEEN Snickers Bars...every single day.

Good guess. He finished last May, here is a link to a photo of him at the end of the walk:

For comparison, this is what he looked like at the start of the trip:

He just may have become another statistic in our national diabetes epidemic if his pancreas has overworked itself to an early death producing enough insulin for processing that much refined sugary crap

There are almost 2,000 calories in a cup of pure oil, so just under four cups of any sort of vegetable oil would do it.

This is all just so wrong. But my 2 cents is ... he looks like he shaved at the end of the walk. Probably shaved a couple of micrograms off his overall weight. I know that's another 5 hours in purgatory. I'll take it.

Was he drunk as well? Eating his own feet? Damn. Sorry about that. I'm crawling back in my hole.

Interesting question, pity about the fatman.

I dehydrate my own vegetarian meals and mail drop them, so I don't need to visit convenience stores except for luxuries and incidental items.

Obviously, this guy isn't doing mail drops or hitting grocery stores or, well, anything else a smart hiker does.

That being the case, what ARE the healthiest choices at a gas station for a hiker who needs good-quality calories? What high-protein sources are there? I've never really thought about it that much since I don't think of gas stations as food sources, except for the occasional snack.

I go for that gas station coffee my self, especially with those international creamers. Gas station coffee...UUUuummmmmnn...Doh! No wonder I can't quit. And those of you who read my posts, you know I'm not supposed to be drinking coffee.

Pretty hard to add fat, sugar and preservatives to a hard boiled egg. They seem to be fairly common in most gas station convenience stores.

It may not be just refined sugar that's fattening him up and creating other health problems. Check out this article: http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=weight.loss&category=diet.strategies&conitem=fce999edbbbd201099edbbbd2010cfe793cd____

For some reason, the article is not coming up. Click on the link above to Mens Health Magazine, at the search field (upper left hand side) type in "The devil's candy." It is about the dangers of high fructose corn syrup and its causal connection to the rise in childhood obesity in America.

Dollars-to-donuts (pun intended) this guy wouldn't think twice about adding a bunch of those single serving mayonaise packets and salt to 6 - 12 eggs to make himself a little egg salad.

Did you see this article, where the guy defended his cross-country junkfood binge by saying "I've walked through the Midwest, the breadbasket, and it is one of the most unhealthy places on earth. You have all these rolling acres of farmland, and you can't even buy fresh fruit and veg. The last apple I ate came from South America - and it looked like it had rolled here."

He actually claims its impossible to buy fruits and vegetables anywhere in the midwest, and that's why he was forced to eat nothing but junk food.

Wow the pigs feet seems to be the best value I hear it's good for the heart as well (I'm kidding on that one). Give me some of those trotters. Tip: Fresly sliced onions and a dab of soy makes those little beasties a treat (for me at least). Hmmm I'm getting a little hungry now.

I can actually do a pretty reasonable resupply in a 7-11. Hot dogs and taquitos while I'm standing there and sandwiches and fruit for the first night out. After that, high fat-high cal walking food like granola, gorp, jerky and a couple of snickers, and ramen, easy mac, and stuffing mix for evening meals. They also have cooking alcohol and basic kit.

I'm 6' 2" 170 and make sure to take a multivitamin every day. I avoid empty calories, but I'd be completely satisfied to find a Qick-E-Mart for a resupply point.

Im still on the hunt for the mythical 1000 calorie honey bun. I once saw it in a vending machine never to be seen again. Any help locating this would be nice.

My sister lives in Wichita, KS, the capital of fast food. There are more fast food chains headquartered in Wichita than anywhere else in this country. One of my sister's kids is a real health food nut and a vegetarian. Amazingly, she is able to sustain her lifestyle in spite of where she lives. You may need to look in other places than on Main Street or a main street loaded with strip centers and fast food joints, but trust me(or check for yourself), fresh veggies and fruits are obtainable... even in the heartland. He is full of bologna and pig's feet if that is what he is claiming.

I also read somewhere that this guy basically just lost it towards the end. There are large parts of the trip that are unaccounted for, his wife divorced him and he was binge eating again. So I don't think all of his calories were from 7-11's....
