my friend recently purchased a "Lowe Alpine- cerro terro" trail backpack. the 'waist belt' is putting too much pressure on his frontal-side waist bones (because he is quite skinny) and it is causing him quite a bit of pain and discomfort
and advice or suggestions on how to relieve presure.
thanks in advance

He should return it. The pack shouldn't hurt. That's where the weight is supposed to be, on the pelvic girdle. Try a Granite Gear Nimbus Ozone.

Your friend may need a quick fix or a new pack, but it could also be something his or her body will accept in time. I don't have experience with the pack you mentioned or the pack mentioned by a previous poster. I do know that when one begins a hike of the A.T. it's something new or in some cases entirely new, never done by that person before. Some patience is usually required as one's body adjusts to the new demands placed upon it.

You might suggest your friend call the manufacturer for advice or inquire with an established outfitter near the A.T. if the problem doesn't go away.

It's hard to tell from afar, but I'm wondering if maybe the hipbelt isn't small enough or riding at the optimal location? You said your friend is thin.

I was thin and carried a pack quite heavy relative to my weight years ago when I hiked the A.T. I found the load most easily and comfortably borne when the hip belt was drawn up as tight as it could be and rode partly above my pelvis with the most of the weight distributed over a fairly small area. I recall now, years later, I was quite sore for some time before the discomfort subsided.
