A friend of mine (Grasshoper) is thru-hiking right now with a pocketmail . . . it has allowed him to add to his blog and send messages requesting supply drops . . . a great little tool.

No ebay is bad, very bad. No pocketmails on ebay. Nothing to see there, move along.
What I am trying to say is I am working on getting one there. I have been trying for the last week but they always seem to go to high. Basically let's not bid each other up if you go that route.;)

It's the best price around for a new PocketMail Composer
Might be all gone but it's worth a try. Wife and I each got one here and have told other hikers about it who I know have purchased them. Don't get spooked by the "Black Book" thing. Just the name of an inventory sell-off company that bought up a bunch of them a while back.

NO dont go that route either...there are only 2 and I am considering buying one...price seems a little too good to be true considering it is "as is" but, lemme know how it works if you do. :)

It did seem a bit "too good to be true" but we went ahead and took the leap. Have 2 of them sitting at home right now. It's a brand spankin new, never been used PocketMail Composer. Includes the owners manual and even a set of AA batteries.
Spoke with the vendor and they explained that they had purchases a "lot" of them at some point and recently decided to sell them off. It is the exact same box that is sold for $100 on the PocketMail website.
You do have to call/dial on to the website and activate service. Another 2007 AT thru-hiker bought on at my suggestion, activated service and just e-mailed me today from his device. He said that signing up for the service on-line was a breeze.

Received new PocketMail the other day....it's brand new....net cost including shipping was $60. Thanks again 'slogger.
FYI - Original plan was to familiarize myself with keyboard/etc now then activate service a few weeks prior to 7/1 departure but other than enter contact info there is not a whole lot you can do without paying for the service.

Did you figure out that you can hit the "BACK" button once you load the batteries and turn on the PocketMail unit. That allows you to navigate all the functions (other than sending/receiving messages) and familiarize yourself with the device prior to activating service.

Talking about the price being "too good". I bought one a while back on E-Bay for $6.50. I'm still gloating.
