View Full Version : Olive oil transportation.
Earl Grey 03-20-2007, 12:17 So im still figuring out what I want to take and olive oil will be on the menu. The question is whats the best way to transport it? I was thinking of some kind of plastic container with a screw spout, similar to a ketchup container in a restaurant. Except this would be able to be closed by screwing the top on and off. Also not as big as a restaurant one because well thats too much, more like a 1/4 of that size. Does something like this exist?

Nalgene makes a set of small screw-top bottles (2 - 4oz) that work well. Just to be on the safe side I always put the container in a ziplock inside my food bag.

Midway Sam 03-20-2007, 12:38 My local outfitter has a bottle that is just like the Camp Suds bottle with the spout. That's what I use. I can't find one like it online. It's like this one, but 8oz...

They say theyre leakproof but I dunno. The second one looks more leakproof to me.
Midway Sam 03-20-2007, 12:41 Second one for sure. The one I have is oval, like a flask and holds 8oz.

same setup for carrying EVOO
Visit your local pharmacist, as for a couple of brand new 4 oz liquid medicine bottles. Leak proof, food safe, .....free.....
I use these for my olive oil and syrup.
Hog On Ice 03-20-2007, 14:15 I use a small 8 ounce spring water bottle for carrying the olive oil - been using it for a few years now with no problems - I carry the bottle in my cozy for a little extra protection from punctures
I carry mine in a square clear bottle I found at REI, in the bins of bottles. Holds maybe 4 ounces? Or for short trips, I just get the packets of olive oil from Minimus!
Creek Dancer 03-20-2007, 14:21 If you use several of the same type of bottles for different things, be sure to label the outside or you might end up dousing your pasta with camp suds instead of olive oil when it's dark outside and you are really really hungry...not that I ever did that! :p
If your worried about it spilling while on your way to the trail, put a piece of duct tape over the top for added protection.
hopefulhiker 03-20-2007, 15:00 you can put the bottle inside a zip lock for extra protection. I did this with my fuel bottle.
Jack Tarlin 03-20-2007, 15:15 I use a small Nalgene bottle, like Footslogger said.
In my experience, anything with that little fold-out squirt attachment cap will find a way to open itself up and divest its contents all over the inside of your pack. Whether we're talking lighter fluid, Olive Oil, Soy Sauce, or anything else, it makes for a really disgusting mess. As several people have suggested, always Ziplock your small liquid containers, Honey Bears, or anything similar. Murphy's Law of the Trail.....if it CAN open and make a horrible mess, it WILL find a way to do so. A Ziplock firewall is a really good idea.
Rebel, with a Cause! 03-20-2007, 17:45 I bought a bunch of bottles from this place. United States Plastic Corp.

So far I have used the 8 Oz Oval with Spout top for my Alcohol, The 4 Oz for my Olive Oil, 2 Oz for my soap. If anyone needs weights on any of these just let me know :) I also bought a set of the Micro-mini dropper bottles for my bug protection and Aqua Mura.

Mine leaked. Make sure you get a heavier one rather than a thinner one if you go this route.
handlebar 03-20-2007, 20:23 I used a 260ml juice bottle--had Welch's white grape juice in it. It's mouth was about 1-1/4 in in diameter and it had a screw cap. I just poured a dollop of oil into the water as I made my Lipton's sides or mac n-cheese. This was perfect for me as it will hold the contents of small 250ml olive oil bottles from grocery stores.

Leaked from where? The cap or the bottle itself?

If you ask for the oval, amber colored 240 ml container (8 liquid oz) they use for dispensing liquids like cough syrup and such, they almost always offer it free when you politely ask, "How much is it"? One local pharmacy gave me two of them. I have never seen the 4 liquid ounce container but the 8 ounce one is great for about a week's cooking of one's stove alcohol, and another can be used for olive oil or whatever. Plus, the child-proof top is easily disabled-just gingerly remove the top, white rotator cover, leaving the clear plastic cover below with the gears. It helps to distinguish which container holds which liquid. Plus, one can hardly better the price and free includes no tax, no shipping!:D

Even worse would be substituting olive oil for a sip of bourbon.
TJ aka Teej 03-21-2007, 13:16 POG once gave me some she had packaged with a seal-a-meal dohicky.
beckybellis 03-21-2007, 13:52 in the camping department at dicks sporting goods, they have a package deal of small screw top plastic bottles all different sizes, just a few bucks

It was a thin bottle, it got "wrinkles", and leaked from a crease.

Container Store stocks all sizes of screw top nalgene bottles, round, square, flip-top, screw-top, dropper. They had them on sale last June or July. They're even good for carrying powdered drink mix, much less messy than a bag. I decided the weight was worth it after considering what a bunch of powdered drink mix loose in a pack on a rainy day could do.

I use a small 4 oz nalgene or a contact solution bottle with the nozzle drilled out to the size of a paperclip thickness. The contact solution bottle has a much better cap for squirting in a little olive oil without the dribble effect of the nalgene.
Fiddleback 04-03-2007, 17:53 My favorite -- recycled contact lens solution bottles, with or without the spouts. Indestructable and leak proof, although, to be honest, I haven't tried it with olive oil.
I endorse the U.S.Plastics Corp recommendation above...containers galore and quick on shipping.
