LW has an intersting story about Jiffy Pop at Plumorachrd Shelter. It goes something like this: "blow & shake" ....

I am incredibly impressed. There is actually someone on this board who actually, even one time, had Jiffy Pop that actually popped? Instead of turning into a blackened, scorched, disgusting, disappointing mess? Wow, you guys are woodsmen (and women) for sure!

Hiked with a guy in 00' named ''Popcorn'' he made popcorn every night in his camp pot from kernals and oil. Best thing is he shared. Met him again in 04' on the PCT.

Quite easy. There are 3 requirements:
Low heat
Constant "swirling" of the pan
PatienceIt's a favorite of my Cub Scouts.
I am taking a thing of Jiffy Pop when I start. I hope it works out. I would hate to carry it for nothing
Jiffy Pop is good: but!! You can not turn your eyes on it, even for a half second. And never quit shaking it.
And don't get greedy thinking you'll get it all popped ;) It is like microwave popcorn, too long and it torches.
Yes, go low and slow (it's all in the wrist) and you will not scorch it.
The best part is the 'frying pan' that you can use a couple of times if you do not abuse it (overheat). Fried eggs in the A.M. or pancakes, bacon, sausage-whatever. Just bring some oil to fry the eggs! :p

dont bring jiffy pop that stuff sucks!
when ever I make popcorn on the trail I just put a little oil in my trek pot, put in the kernals put on the lid and shake it around a bit until it starts poppin, makes more than a pot full.
I was just wondering if other did this as well... leave jiffy pop at home its too heavy and burns way to easy..

Ya this is funny you bring this up. I though I was the only nerd that enjoyed doing this. This is a great treat for me and keeps me busy just before dark. I normally try to start this just before dark so that when it's time to eat it, it's dark out and is a good reason to stay outside my tent a little longer after dark.
I use my own boiling pot olive oil, and a hankerchief to hold the small metal handles. I bring a small piece of aluminum foil and place it on top of the boiling pot and 'crinch' it around and under the pot lip as much as i can, and then place the lid on top of the foil. Scorching for me has generaly not been a big problem because I only use a small amout of corn. I build an extremely small fire and feed it with small twigs as i go. I wipe the pot clean with my hankerchief when im done. Normally I can cook at finish eating the small batch of popcorn in a hour from start to finish.
This is purely for entertainment and to me is comfort food. The time I take to prepare it and mess with it is well worth it and strangely fun. I always put alot of salt on it, and even sprinke garlic powder on it many times before i get to the bottom of the pot :)
Unpopped kernals always remain and I save them and try to repop them the next night. The second batch of unpopped kernals get thrown out, and there are alot of them :)
One good method to avoid scorching and speed up popping is:
1. Put in just enough oil to coat bottom of pan (what would come about half way up a kernal
2. drop in 3 or 4 kernals, cover pot and place on lit stove.
3. listen
4. When you first hear a couple of the kernals pop, the oil and pan is hot enough, at that point pour in enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan, no more.
5. Cover and start to shake, popcorn should begin popping almost immediatly.
When it gets to the lid, stop shaking, turn off your camp stove and start eating.
Using this method reduces how long you have to shake the popcorn and reduces scorching as you spend less time waiting for the oil to heat up. If your pot doesnt have a lid then foil will do. Try this at home first.
I also premeasure the popcorn at home and store it in a ziplock bag by batch.
Before anyone tries this in a Jetboil, (I thought about it!) think about what happens when you wave around the Jetboil. Then picture shaking corn. Yeehaw!
I have them un popped.. It's better if you cook it over during your camp fire..:D

I knew popcorn in 2000 he was cool. I saw him do it this way once.
An easier way is to just carry the microwave packs, open them and dump them in your pot and cook away. That pack should contain enough oil to get them goin.
I seem to recall it workin well, although I have never tried it
