It's as efficient as an alcohol stove, pretty light, and easy to use.

On the downside, Esbit fuel can be difficult to find as not everyone carries it, which means you'll either have to mail yourself fuel tabs or carry a lot with you as you go; the fuel also gets expensive over 175 days.

Thanks Jack, what about the fumes, are they toxic, or can you use it a confined space?:-?

Well I wouldn't use it in a tent, but 99% of the time you'll be cooking outside.

I mean, when does anyone use ANY camp stove indoors?

But to answer your question, if used outside, there's nothing to worry about.

Don't forget the smell. I can't stand the smell of those things, makes my whole pack reek, and I keep it double baggied.

So Im looking at an Esbit. I see that the smell was a factor and the tabs availability. I had thought there was no smell. Is theer certain tabs you can get that dont smell? Also, what is something that you could carry it in that would block the smell besides the baggies?

They all smell in my experience. You might try a small PP container. Works for instant coffee.

HA HA

The newer esbit tabs do not smell so strong. But even when they did smell, I loved them.

I think the best thing about them is that they're so cheap and the fact that you can extinguish them and relight them makes an even better value. And they're lightweight.

Usually....8 minutes to burn. Also 8 minutes to bring 1 cup of water to burn. Higher elevations/windy...2 tabs. I did a search on ebay for esbit tabs and there was an auction for 648 tabs for $7.95 on a buy-it-now and shipping is $4.95...if that isn't worth it ;)

I'd keep a pack of them anyways for emergency on a hike in case my "other" stove went, so pick a pack up and try it out.

I don't boast about any gear besides my esbit and my lightweight Salomon pack.

Well hell, Starlyte had a stove named after her. How many women can say that?
