The shelter is located about .2 miles off the trail... gets a cool breeze in evening. Can comfortably sleep about six... anymore would be tough to fit, due to posts in the middle of the floor. It has lots of tenting sites around it... though hang your food because I saw a porcupine wandering around in the morning. Water is about 500 yards past the shelter itself.

I had an absolute blast at this shelter this weekend. Lots of LT hikers and SOBO thru-hikers still coming through.

If staying at Seth Warner, hang your food carefully - it's been on the route of a marauding bear for some time now. Most recently, a LT hiker lost his food on his first night out, around 8/20

I saw a bear a few miles south of there in early August and he didn't run (refer to the "lost nerve" thread for the juicy details).

In late August I was section hiking from Stratton to little rock pond and an AT thruhiker told me that she read in the Seth Warner journal that a hiker lost her food on the night of 8/22 or 8/23. The story was that the girl hung her food from a tree, but the bear pulled the tree over and got the food.

I stayed there 2 nights ago on the last day of my Long Trail hike. Hung the food pretty high. It was safe in the morning. Of course being my last day, there wasn't much in the bag.

BTW, the guidebook says the water source may fail but the brook was flush when I was there. Then again, that followed 3 days of rain.

I stayed here on my 06 thru hike. I believe I was there sometime very late July to early August. Anyway I tented next to shelter and hung my food from the mouse hang within the shelter (as I had done since Virginia). No problems. I was alone at shelter. No signs of animals.

Seth Warner looks like it can sleep about 8. There's a bear box there now, bolted to a concrete slab. No sign of bear on 10/9/09
