Saw this report over on carolina-hikers yahoo page. Has anyone else heard a report on this guy?
"Saturday I was on the AT in Georgia going up the mountain between Cooper Gap and
Justice Creek (about 3 miles south of Gooch shelter) and there was a new thru
hiker suffering heat exhaustion or heat stroke on the trail. Poor dude was
comatose with nothing but his hand shaking uncontrollably. Rescue had already
been called and some dudes had already left to fetch fresh cold water. A couple
guys were holding a mat to give him shade and another was waving a fan at him,
and 20 other dudes standing around watching. I hope that guy is alright. I
didn't see any mention of it in trail journals or whiteblaze yesterday."

I saw mention of it from dayhiker over on trail talk. He hiked that route this past weekend.
I hope the hiker is okay. I hope they get a reprieve in heat soon down there (if they haven't already). I was on Springer on Monday/Tuesday to see a friend off and I didn't hear about it. I believe Mountain Squid said it was completely dry between Hawk Mtn Shelter and Gooch Mtn Shelter.
I passed by at right about the same time, headed southbound on a weekend hike. The guy was definitely in bad shape but there were already plenty of people hanging around so I kept walking, passing some EMT's on their way up (without any equipment with them yet). There was a crew of EMT's at Cooper Gap trying to figure out how to get their motorized 6-wheeler up the trail (didn't work) and I think they eventually tried to get him out on a stretcher with a big wheel in the middle. He was pretty far up the trail though, and was a big guy...I'm sure it took a while. I hope he ended up okay.
Goes to show: one can become hypothermic or hyperthermic in North Ga. in March. I hope the fella made out OK.

you can hear the stream from there can't ya? No. It's on up the road and around a couple turns.
Sitch described by Gator Gump (http://trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=170838)who says it happened on Sassafrass. He might be wrong. Photos definitely show Cooper Gap (http://trailjournals.com/photos.cfm?id=206549).
Anybody want to kiss the southern terminus plaque?
Is it starting out to be dry year already, or isn't this section always questionable for water?
Sure hope the guy is AOK, happy and peaceful healing thoughts sent his way :)

it's dry this year here in GA...we're "entering a mild drought"

looks like north georgia is 10 - 11" of precip below normal year-to-date:

Yeah, I've already had to install the irrigation system in the vegetable garden and it's way too early for that, it's not even late spring. The blackberries haven't started to bloom and it's not azalea season since they haven't held the Masters yet - which are the signs of late spring in GA.

Thanks for starting this thread. Heat is not something I thought I'd need to be concerned about this early. I'll keep it in mind.

No, I hadn't linked to the picture. Thanks for the warning.
Ewww! Why would someone DO that?!!!! That really pisses me off. Why would someone put their behind on the plaque when they KNOW people routinely kiss the plaque?!?
I don't think a little Purell will fix that.
Look forward to seeing you out there Ewker. :)

A group of us were up there when he did that.
He said it was tradition just before doing it (without warning to onlookers before dropping his pants by the way:eek: ). So is it tradition to bare-a** the plaque or not? I've never heard of it and Many Sleeps (the GATC caretaker seemed to be hinting that it was not.

Sorry, My bad I guess the two threads intertwined. Just starting at the first unread post I didn't remember what all was said.
