A friend of mine, his dog, and I wandered about in a desert for a day. We stopped for dinner. My friend had brought Spam.

We divided it up, a third for each.

His dog - a large breed who had, to that point eaten everything and anything - smelled the Spam and turned away.

We looked at and smelled the Spam which seemed fine.

We all went hungry.

**

The next day, I checked back. My friend reported his dog seemed perfectly healthy.

My, and my friend’s, last Spam experience.

When a healthy dog with a usually ravenous appetite won’t eat something ...

My only question is, is Spam a fire starter? If not, leave it in the store.

A couple (4 or 5) years ago when I was leading (usually trailing) a group of teen boys on weekend campouts there was one dinner recipe that I knew I wouldn't have to worry about left-overs: Mac'n'cheese with Spam chunks.

Spaghetti? Leftovers.
Tuna anything? Leftovers.
Spammed M&C? Gone.

Not just gone - the cooking pot would be scraped. Even then one of the kids would look inside to see if there was any more left.

So dogs might not eat Spam but teenage boys sure do.

Spam with some cheese and hot sauce in a flour tortilla is great for breakfast or lunch or dinner or snack :D

Dunno, I think some dogs are just pickier than others. I had a Malinois named Aggie who wouldn't touch Michelobe, but he loved Lonestar.

Fried SPAM and eggs make a great breakfast sAndwich, with or without tabaso.

As far as earworms are concerned, the snake thread made me think of this site. http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com (http://www.badgerbadgerbadger.com/) Enjoy.

I think it should be matter of Spam vs. Treet? My take is Treet is much better than Spam. But on the trail, it's all good regardless.

Have you tried the turkey spam? Pretty freakin' good.

Nope never had the turkey. Is it 100% turkey or a conglamerate of meat?

The only meat in it is turkey. What part of the turkey it comes from is another matter entirely.

The other main ingredient seems to be sodium in most of it's more important and interesting forms.

Turkeys don't wattle. They strut; Just look at Geraldo Rivera.

Um.

wattle:
a fleshy lobe or appendage hanging down from the throat or chin of certain birds, as the domestic chicken or turkey.

Oh I know that. I'm a bonified farm boy. FFA and the works.

Geraldo has a bit of a wattle these days too.

I wonder how well that stuff would dehydrate. Did you know that spam is considered a delicacy in Hawaii. Not by the kamaainas, but by the locals. I lived there for years and now I'm hooked on spamics.

It hasn't been mentioned but you can buy Spam in the foil pouch now. I realize most know that but some may not have. My local Kroger and sometimes Wal Mart carries it.

For me, the most disgusting would have to be potted meat. I actually chose to go hungry once rather than eat it a second time on a weekend trip (someone else had brought all the food for the group)

Spam was one of the first words my daughter learned to spell, which was interesting since we never had it in the house. One day she came to me and spelled: SPAM. She then asked if I knew what was in Spam. When I told her I didn't, she told me Spam means: Smashed-Pressed-Animal-Meat. I have no idea where she got that.

She's 25 now and won't walk within 10ft of Spam. She also still believes that Fig Newton filling is finely ground meat and bones. The crunchy seeds being the bones.

Needless to say she won't eat Fig Newtons or Spam.

Spam fried in brown sugar and butter ... now that is more my style.
The Turkey Spam is good.
What SPAM it is made up of is the following:

*chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added
*salt (for binding and firmness)
*water (to help in mixing)
*sugar (for favor)
*sodium Nitrite (for color and as a preservative)

but I still what to know what parts of ham meat are added??? :D

One gets use to Spam, Hot Dogs, and Sausage...living in Hawaii...or one is really rich!!!

I try to keep it in the house for "ham" salad. spam, mayo, onion, and whatever anyone else likes in their ham salad. Not necessarily a trail food but hey. I "try" to keep it but others in the house like to fry it up.

Spam is a great trail food! Fry it up, throw some spicy mustard over it and make a sandwich. Mmm mmm good. Of course I also love Scrapple. So I'm not at all picky I guess. :D
