View Full Version : NH maps (and others)
Looking to buy a mapset for the Whites at a deep discount, will take a set up to 10 years old. Would also like to get a set for all of NE. Would consider other AT sets, too, for the right price.

Get a set of the National Geographic maps for that area. They go past Mahoosuc Notch as well. I found them VERY handy, with considerable critical detail not on the official ATC-approved maps.

The Nat. Geographic maps are not that good. The AMC has good maps of the Whites.

Based upon my experience thruhiking through the Whites last fall, it's best to have BOTH sets. There were multiple trail crossings (that would have been confusing had I been limited to only ATC maps) much better depicted on the Nat. Geo maps.
This map was suggested to me when I made a similar querry:

Only $10 and has a nice overview of the Whites.

Read carefully, please! The AMC and ATC are not the same thing. Maybe MS should carry all three sets.
Looking at doing a trip next summer - 2008 - so any maps at this point are decent for preliminary planning. Mags' link looks pretty good for having on the trail. Lighten up on MS, will ya, its a decent suggestion (NG maps) by someone who's experience is well-documented.
Tortoise_Also - got your PM and tried to reply but your mail was full. I love maps, especially free ones. Let me know if you get my reply after clearing some space.

I consider the AMC nothing but the local chapter of the ATC, so there's no confusion there IMO. Got it all cleared up in that pretty little head of yours now? ;) :D

Minnesotasmith-"I consider the AMC nothing but the local chapter of the ATC, so there's no confusion there IMO. Got it all cleared up in that pretty little head of yours now? "If by any chance you can get it straight in that thick skull of yours, you are completely wrong as usual.
The AMC is a huge club with over 100,000 members that has been around since 1876 and is the oldest and largest mountain club in the U.S., compared with the relatively new and small ATC. The AMC is no more a local chapter of the ATC than the earth is part of the moon; or the United States is part of Minnesota, you're arsebackwards as usual . The ATC has their maps that cover the A.T., The AMC has their detailed set of maps for the Whites and elsewhere. The AMC has produced White Mountain guidebooks for over 100 years, the ATC more recently has its guidebooks that cover the A.T. You probably don't see any pattern here but someone with a scientific background would instantly see the difference.
I suggest you stop trolling, you detract from any thread you post your garbage in. And yes, everyone's head is little compared to yours and everyone is damn proud that is the case!:D

Sounds like sniveling.
No patch for minnesotasmith.

The map adventures maps of the Whites are also very good. I think there are two maps that cover the WMNF. The AMC maps are better for HIKING than the Nat. Geo. maps in the Whites IMHO. I agree that the ATC maps are somewhat lacking. They do what they are supposed to; they show the AT. Very little is provided in regards to intersecting trails. And what's up with that weird orange background color? You never specified whether your trip was on the AT or on other trails in the Whites. If you plan to hikes trails besides the AT, I would recommend you buy the AMC or Map Adventures hiking maps. BTW map adventures have distance in metric, not U.S. measurement.

The AMC is a huge club
Not after you take out the bull**** part. Once you remove the marketing department, the divisions that offer services normal hikers can't afford, the the sections that generate profits that are consumed internally for no good purpose (prostituting what should be, and elsewhere on the AT is, something freely available to the U.S. citizenry as a whole, since Americans as a whole do own it), there's not much left. The part of the AMC worth keeping isn't very large IMO.
Not after you take out the bull**** part. Once you remove the marketing department, the divisions that offer services normal hikers can't afford, Thruhikers aren't normal hikers. Even thruhikers generally acknowledge they are not normal. If I had to give an example of a normal hiker, one who resides at the top of the bean curve of hikers, it wouldn't be anyone I know from here.
And I mean that in the nicest way possible. Normal is pretty boring. No one ever accused Lone Wolf, Baltimore Jack, matthewski or even yourself to be boring.

Fortunately, the AMC's existence isn't up to you. They existed long before you did, and will be there long after you're gone.

The Old Fhart-"The AMC is a huge club......"
Minnesotasmith-"Not after you take out the bull**** part. "I guess we can take that reply of yours to mean you got caught in another lie but your not man enough to admit it.:D
Your knowledge of the internal workings of the AMC is on par with your knowledge of their maps-zero. Go back under your bridge and leave this discussion to 'normal' hikers.

Minnesotasmith-"Once you remove [blah, blah, blah, blah], there's not much left.Oh, maybe you should actually read what I said. Even if you remove all AMC services, huts, shelters, etc (that caters to countless thousands of 'normal' hikers per year), and of course their guidebooks and maps, the AMC still have over 100,000 members, I guess you conveniently missed that part of the facts. A trained scientist deals with facts so I can understand how you might have missed it.

So were the White Mtns. in existence long before the AMC came about, and will be there long after the AMC is forgotten.
