Hello friends....

As most of you know, Sue Turner, "Hammock Hanger (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=4974)" who posts here frequently, started her journey to be the first person to thru hike the Great Eastern Trail (http://americanhiking.chattablogs.com/archives/047155.html) on April 2, 2007.

Sue phoned me yesterday from Montgomery Alabama where she states that people from the areas around the G.E.T. have been very kind, generous and supportive of her. Yes, there are some that assume she is a vagabond ha ha !!

The Montgomery Advertiser (http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007704100332), a local newspaper, did a great write up about Sue. There have been many media interests with Sue and her hike; I'm sure this is just the beginning.

Hammock Hanger (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=120) is an accomplished hiker and you can read her journals dating back to 2001.

Next week this time she will be hiking on the Pinhoti Trail.

I had no Idea the GET was so new. I am starting to contimplate this instead of another Thru attempt on the A.T. It might be a good precursor. Afterall it goes through my back yard! I'm so Glad HH is the first...she really makes us women look good! :D hehe It is sweet that ppl have stopped and prayed with her so much and taken interest!

Thanks Starlyte for the info!

Sue is also featured on page 125 of the May 2007 edition of Prevention Magazine! That magazine has a circulation of over 3,000,000!

You can find links to Sue's journal, and the Great Eastern Trail website from Prevention's webpage;

It is an excellent journal.

My favorite part is her talk about all the help she is getting and concern that people have for her. Very enlightening.

I have always been jealous of the ease with which female hikers get rides and have people just generally offer help without being asked. I never thought of it from the female hikers' point of view.

Hammock Hanger gives me that view, and it is very interesting. While she appreciates the kindnesses, they are not without a price. She notes that when men in general (she mentioned Nimblewill Nomad in particular) do what she is doing, people assume that they are embarking on a grand adventure. When a woman does the same thing, the first thought of most people is that she is homeless or a vagrant or totally with money or resources.

That would get old with me after a while.

It's always nice to walk (even vicariously) in another's shoes.

Umm.

Is that Australian Shepherd dragging a cat across the creek (http://www.trailjournals.com/photos.cfm?id=213522)or have I already exceeded my wine limit for the evening?

I'm probably letting my ignorance show, but does anyone have a map showing the AT and the GET? I'm curious about links/crossover/shared foot bed.

I got to hike with her this weekend, we had a great time! Spent a zero in Cave Springs. Had dinner with Solo and Adze. She left again on Monday morning bypassing Rome, GA. She should be getting picked up to go to the AHS conference soon and then to TrailDays.

Shes doing well and loves getting all the emails and guest entries in her journal.

Just a brief Hammock Hanger update...

I walked with Sue from Summerville, GA where she left the Pinhoti Trail. We did 12 miles on Tuesday and camped at a Wildlife Management Area in NW Georgia. On Wednesday we did 17 miles and walked through the Crockford Pigeon Mountain WMA. The heat & drought are making hiking difficult. We had to cache water in advance of our hike, as most creeks are dry here.

She entered Chattanooga on Friday and we met with some press. A nice article appeared in the Chattanooga paper yesterday. The online article is much shorter than what appeared in print. Yesterday she walked through downtown Chattanoooga on the Greenway system and had a really nice day.

Today Sue is doing a 16-mile section of the Cumberland Trail. She'll continue on the Cumberland Trail until Wednesday, then she's off to Traiil Days.

I just posted more photos on Hammock Hanger's trailjournal (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=184672), about 100 more to follow this week!

Wendi (ALHikerGal) hiked with Sue for a while, great photos. Also RockStar sent her an unexpected package...that was very nice and much appreciated, I'm sure!

Enjoy the photos!

After ending her GET hike, HH decided to hike the Tuscarora Trail, Standing Stone Trail, & Mid-States trail taking her from Northern Virginia through West Virginia, Maryland, and well into Pennsylvania. She's doing well! I met her Monday evening, finding her campsite around 6:30 in WV only 2 days hike from Hancock, MD. Gave her some homemade brownies, fresh peaches, and cold drinks. We had never previously met but enjoyed talking about hiking and the WBers we both knew.

She's hiking with Nails, another Florida woman who's completed all of the AT except Maine.

Their hike ends in PA around August 15. She's on TrailJournals (http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=4974).

I've placed 2 pics in the photo gallery.

I just found that this thread exisited from Cookerhead when he visited with us the other night in the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Area.

We are doing well, in fact we are 2 days ahead of schedule!! We were suppose to hike shorter days to compensate for heat and lack of water. However, being long distance hikers it is just too hard to stay put.

Unless of course you can find a town with amenities to stay put in. We have done just that. Last night we hiked into Hancock, MD. We got a room in a nice motel and are treating ourselves to a nice zero day. Actually we were just off trail at the Johnson's Hiker Loft a few days ago. We had so many errand and chores, not to mention visiting with others that we never really got to sleep the day away so that is what we are going to do after this trip to the library and lunch.

I know I had some heat and water issues on the GET this summer before going home to rest and recoup. I must say that this section has be beautiful so far. Definately something for you hikers that want to experience some new trails.

The GET is just a baby and will grow each and every year if you started section hiking her now you could grow with her and be some of the first to experience the birth of a long trail... give it some thought.

Heading to lunch and then back to bed!! :D Hammock Hanger
