Given all this wintry weather lately, I can't imagine mud season has even started yet.

Any word on the conditions of the AT in VT, especially the section north of Killington to Hanover? I'd like to catch a couple good days of hiking in that brief window of opportunity between breaking trail in the snow and the worst of the mud. Is the trail along here still snowy and frozen? Or has the mud gotten started?

Still snow covered. The mud should start this weekend. First snow-mud, then mud-mud which should last through. . . oh - August.:D

Actually, if it's anything like last year, it'll last until, oh, say November!

Cool, thanks for the report. Sounds like it may be doable this weekend...

I remember when I was out on a section hike in Vermont last year, in the registers hikers had nicknamed Vermont Vermud. That was in August, but it was a rainy summer last year.

I think I saw those same register entrees. I hiked Katahdin to Dalton last year and was in Vermont in the middle of August. See you at Katahdin June 1st?:) :)

Wear gaitors, carry poles. I'm in Colorado, SOP this time of year.

I was way north of that in VT last October, but reading back through some entries I saw quite a few references to the Long River.

You should be seeing me on June 1st, probably late in the day. I'm hiking Katahdin on the 2nd.

Great, I'm guessing we'll be back to KSC by 5pm and ready to have a great cookout. There's at least 5 other WBers that will be there too. So, has the warm weather today made it even harder to think about anything other than the trail?:) :)
