This is one tough race, nobody finished this year.

Only six runners have ever finished the 100-mile Barkley Marathons since its inception in 1986. Some of the best endurance athletes in the world travel to Tennessee to test themselves against the hardest course in ultra-marathon running. Why? Mainly, they are curious. How hard can they push themselves? How much can they endure before their minds and bodies surrender to the woods?

The Barkley has become a phenomenon among ultramarathon runners. More than 600 athletes have come to Frozen Head State Park to run 100 miles. Many arrive in Tennessee with unabashed bravado: One hundred miles in 60 hours? A pace of less than 2 mph? What elite ultrarunner couldn't manage that?
