View Full Version : Walk In The Woods - without Paul Newman
Well, Shakespeare had the Tempest as a farewell, but Newman won't be doing a last buddy film with Redford, I guess. Today in the news:
Hollywood legend Paul Newman's acting career is a "closed book" so he can concentrate on his restaurant instead.
The Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid star is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a high level of performance so is ditching the silver screen to promote his organic eatery, Dressing Room, instead.
Newman, 82, says: "I'm not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to. You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention.
"So that's pretty much a closed book for me. I've been doing it for 50 years. That's enough."

It was really sort of sad...
My boy can eat fifty eggs!
I'll miss him.
How would they have portrayed men that were way younger then them. You can only do so much with make up. I vote for Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller

still openings for "grumpy old men..." :D
I recently read "The Thunderbolt Kid" by Bill Bryson...a memoir on his childhood. At the end of the book, he quoted his friend "Katz" who said about "A walk in the woods" that it was "mostly fiction". Bryson did nothing to refute the claim.
that's too bad, I was looking forward to it.
Personally I think this is good news.
It is indeed. The star power of Redford & Newman, especially in Newman's last movie would have guaranteed enormous attention to the Trail.
Hiking just dodged a very nasty bullet.
But the gear manufacturers would have loved it.
I vote for Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller

And about that whole Katz comment... Katz is a made up character. He doesn't exist. He's what Bill Bryson refers to as his "alter ego".

I've read most of Bryson's books and have never seen that. Nor have I seen it in print. Care to cite a source to back that up?
According to this interview, Katz is a real person...

Real person from his childhood maybe, but I am not so sure about his hike... :-?
Yep, there has been speculation about the hike, but the supposed "fact" that Katz is Bryson's alter ego is bogus.

I'll look for the source, but Bryson admitted it in an interview. He was talking about how he is a reformed alcoholic and all kinds of stuff, and said that Katz's character was created from pieces of his own personality.
FYI, I have nothing against Bill Bryson, and I loved the book.

I don't know about what Bryson has said in interviews but I met Katz & Bryson at Rainbow Springs Campgound the day after the March 12, 1996 snowstorm that dumped 12 to 18 inches of snow just north of Winding Stair Gap and 2 feet in the Smokies..
The next day my father, Tex, and I stayed in the same motel as Bryson & Katz in Franklin, NC and that is the last time I said or heard of either of them. I finished at Katahdin on Sept 24.
Not trying to start a flame but as I remember the stay at Rainbow Springs Campground, Bryson's description in the book is right on.

Katz is real. He was Bryson's childhood buddy in Des Moines and appears in three of his books -- one of which was written long before AWITW.

What a load of crap! There is no interview that says any of this. Stephen Katz is Matt Angerer.

Not true. I talked to someone who encountered them in '96 when the hike occurred. He confirmed Katz's existence.
There was something on this subject on another one of the Walk in the Woods threads saying that "Katz" (not his real name) had come public.
soooo, are they still going to do 'a walk in the woods' or has the whole movie been canceled since he retired?
Still going to be made. To be filmed in NC but not on the AT.

Not trying to be coy about it but the person involved didn't give me any kind of permission to quote him. He is a reliable source. The actors are set and the location is set. Personally, I hope the movie is a flop. The trail doesn't need that kind of publicity.
I enjoyed the book. Read it twice, and took an audio CD version out of the library once when on a long drive.
I'm kind of looking forward to the movie.
It is likely to be pretty funny.

All right then...... Time to think about some alternative casting:
1. John Goodman and Steve Buscemi?
2. Sean Connery and Michael Caine?
3. Sean Conery and Alex Trebek?
4. Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy (I really like this one!)
5. John McCain and Al Sharpton?
6. Michael Moore and Bill O'Reilly?
7. Curt Schilling and Alex Rodriguez?
8. Bfitz and Terrapin Too?
9. Bag 'OTrix and Mala?
10. To hell with it. Me and Jester will do it. Cheap.

My wife just saw him recently at our local Target, he lives right down the street from it, and what does she say to him, " I don't care for an old guy you are still hot!" and "My dogs love your dog treats." She said she dorked out because she felt like she was a 16 year old girl again. He could probably still do it, but not to the level of perfection that he is used to working. Supposedly, Redford was doing filming late last year and early this year along the AT corridor, no one knows for what though.

Am I the only one who thinks this would be a crappy movie anyway, unless it were re-written to much as to be practically unrecognizable in relation to the book?
I could see it rewritten as a more cohesive and focused comedy, sort of "Trains, Planes and Automobiles" re-written for the AT, or somesuch, but trying to do a straight up rendition of the book as a film, in my mind, seems like a bad idea and a box office flop waiting to happen, no matter who stars in it.
Back in the 70'S I competed against Paul in SCCA road races. He is a genuine nice guy and a fierce racer.
At the runoffs at Road Atlanta in '77 we were near his team in the paddock. While everyone in the class were moving to the hot pits I noticed that my wife wasn't around. I turned back toward the paddock just in time to see my wife standing like a star struck teenager in the middle of the road as Newman's golf cart almost ran her down! I just sorta hung my head as a golf cart full of him and crew came by in uproarious laughter.

Redford's older than me, and too good looking to be Bryson. He's also too fit to be Katz.
Maybe he should get some Real hikers to do the movie.

I met him at the entrance to Lime Rock on my 1990 thru while heading to town. He was leaning against his car talking to someone else when I walked by. He's likely not joking, since he's from northern Virginia (land of the tassel loafer-loving, gently back stabbing, professional drones/politicians).
I hate northern Virginia. It's a gulag of mediocrity.
I tend to think of northern VA as Fairfax County and Loudon County. Mostly the towns of: Reston, Herndon, Oakton, McLean, Chantilly, Centreville, Fairfax City, Vienna, Falls Church, and sort of Manassas.
There are very high concentrations of yuppie and ex-yuppie douchebags in all of these places, and now with a typical house costing between 600k and 1.2 million that's not likely to change. My parents bought into the area when it was just being transformed from a plantation. There was actually a plantation mansion down the street from me for twelve years of my life. They bought because it was what they could afford, and now we've been overrun by douchebags...rich douchebags.
It's pretty sad but accurate to say that many NOVA folks are jerks and are hateful. Oh well, at least they're not on the trail ;) .
I should re-state the part about them being hateful. They're mostly hateful, but a quiet sort of politically correct sort of hateful. No passion and largely note street-smart. That makes for a dull herd of rich/douchebag/soccer mom/organic food-eating/BMW-driving/aggitated jerks.
Northern VA sure has a lot of folks who aren't from Northern VA.
When my wife and I head home for the holidays, to two different points soon to be connected by the GET, we encounter many Virginia tags on cars passing us at such choke points as Breezewood, Pa. and Hummels Wharf, Pa., and we both have cousins who moved down there from such places as Cumberland, Md. and Rochester, N.Y.
Likely most of these folks moved there for the same reason we're here in the Harrisburg, Pa. area - to find work.
Seems a shame that the Internet isn't used for diverting development towards the places that need it in this country, and away from those that don't.
Yeah, but my wife is only 31!!! She was born in 76!!!
Time marches on.
My wife was 28 at the time.
How about Jack Nicholson and Dennis Hopper? I always pictured the folks from the book as being sort of older guys :)
