Hi,
I'm writing this on behalf of my dad. He is interested in doing some hiking this fall and I need some advice in helping him plan his trip.
Is there anyway to get dropped off in the middle of the 100MW?
He has his heart set on hiking the 100MW (rightfully so) but is not interested in carrying the 6 or 7 days of food.
Anyone have any tips?

Hi Blake!
WhiteBlaze member Boarstone is the person to contact about food drops in the 100 Mile. Her info is in the Companion, too. A resupply at the road crossings on one side or the other of Cooper Brook Lean-to is where most ATers get their food drops. And look into a stop at Whitehouse Landing (NO mail-drops, not a real re-supply), it's a sporting camp that's a retro-trip back to the days of Myron Avery and Earl Shaffer's trips through Maine. Kick back by the lake, and get some hot food and cold drinks. I stopped in for the first time last August and was glad I did.

Hey
there is a logging road in the 100 miles called Mary Jo Rd you could use that as a start or end point if you have a time limit. From the road north it is a short hike to the Pleasant River fording and then you have Gulf Hages Trail. Hope this helps

My Dad has a camp up in that area. I think he's only 20 miles from the AT via the Jo Mary Road. His name on here is "Fly By Mike". I'll talk to him but you might want to send him a message.
Cheers and good luck!

Last year, I set up a shuttle through Shaw's in Monson. Buddy, from Shaw's dropped my hiking partner and me at Gulf Hagas, then we hiked back to Monson.
In a previous year, I had a shuttle to Jo Mary Road. That is a reasonable trail head, right on the AT.
There is another trail head a few miles south of Jo Mary. The road is blocked about .4 mile from the AT, but it is easy road walk to the AT.
Buddy at Shaw's knows all of the potential drop off points. In addition to getting you where you need to go, you will find it to be an entertaining ride.

After rereading your request, I realized that your Dad may need input beyond just where to get a food drop. I have hiked the 100 Mile Wilderness each of the last three falls. In my opinion, it is one of the best hikes in the U.S.
It is possible to hike the entire 100 Mile Wilderness in 7 days. Many thru-hikers do it each year; however, northbounders are in top trail condition when they reach Monson. Unless your dad is in top condition, he shouldn't plan to do the entire 100 Mile Wilderness in 7 days.
It has been my experience that I enjoy the hike more if I plan 10 miles or less a day. That means that I divide the Wilderness into halves. Year before last, I hiked from the north trailhead on the Golden Road to Gulf Hagas. Last year, I hiked from Gulf Hagas to Monson. That plan worked well, even for an old guy.
If you dad wants a copy of my plan showing camps and mileage, have him send me a private message or email.

There are several roads that crisscross the 100 mile wilderness. If you have a specific area in mind then try looking in the Delorme Maine Atlas and Gazeteer.
There are roads in or near Wilson Valley, Barren Mountain, West Chairback Pond, Gulf Hagas, Jo Mary Area, Logan Brook, Nahmakanta, Nesuntabunt Mountain, and South of Rainbow Lake for examples.
I may be able to drop him off in an area if I have the time off.

Boarstone here: I do resupply and shuttles and on a lot of occasions: rescues/pick-ups planned or not, in the Jo-Mary/K.I. area You'll find Cooper Brook trail/road crossing to be a good gauge as to whether to continue on or call it good. Don't underestimate the country thru there or the weather/water expectations. Both have known to stop many a hiker on occasion for a day or two. When are you planning on going? let me know if I can be of any further help.:)
