I passed that way in late February and there were no signs of any sort of shelter, so I cannot help you with your question. However, I do have advice for anyone going that way: DEFINITELY use the Wayah Bald shelter rather than trying to stop at Siler Bald.
When La Mas, Bonaventure, Ant, Whateva, Slickfoot and I passed that way we saw a hugh butcher knife burried in the picnic table, gear half burned and lying all about, and a backpack sitting in the shelter with extremely disturbing information printed on sheets held inside of it. Also, there were no labeled side trails at the shelter, but on this day in mid-February, when basically no one else was at that location on the AT, there were footprints going in at least ten different directions. We took off and hiked six miles into the night (it was late dusk as we arrived at Siler Bald shelter), which was rather dangerous considering that Bonaventure had lost his headlamp in the blizzard of two days before and was stumbling along between La Mas and I for several hours during a thunderstorm.
This whole experience was rather reminisicent of Bill Bryson's imagined scenario in which he hears a southern drawl call out, from outside his tent, "Hey Virgil, did you remember the rope."
