My son, having started in Georgia this Spring, has invited me to walk a few miles in the SNP with him. Ideally I could drive to Fort Royal and find a shuttle to bring me a few days hiking distance into the park. Rob says 18-20 mile days are now the norm. My legs know better.

I've seen the posts for a number of shuttles and plan to call around. If anyone has a specific recommendation, I would be most appreciative. My plan is to arrive Fort Royal 5:00 pm 6/21 Thursday, park the car, and be shuttled into SNP for the rendezvous. There may be 2 of us, with gear.

I think you might mean Front Royal.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but you might want to check the PATC (Potomac Appalachian Trail Club) website. They used to post shuttle information.

Have fun hiking with your son!

Just finished a section hike of the park. My partner hurt his knee and started to hitch hike in the park to cut off some miles each day. He said he never had more than 20 cars pass him before he got a ride. And the thing is, if I saw him, I would not pick him up :). That said, you could enter the park at Front Royal, park at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center at skyline drive mile marker 5, and hitch hike to whereever you want to meet. Being in the park with a backpack makes hitching easy.

oops ... Front Royal is right. Hitching does seem like a good idea. It's been a few years since I've done that....

Thanks!
