I am curious about the regulations for camping on the summit. I am trying to plan my day to day leaving from Standing Bear to Max Patch. I have heard and seen pics of people camping on the summit and wanted to know if I should just throw out the idea of camping on Max Patch. It would be in mid August.

There are no signs there indicating "No Camping". I was going to sleep on the summit a few weeks ago but a late afternoon storm pushed me off.

There are plenty of good campsites just past the summit area and down a little (nobo), in case the weather precludes camping at the very top.

So is that 13.7 mile hike from Standing Bear is realistic. One of the highlights for me is being able to see that sunrise on Max Patch . I cant stop looking at everyone's pic of Max Patch.

if you're in good shape and get an early start, you'll be fine. just keep in mind that you don't want to camp on max patch if the weather doesnt look good, and i imagine it's always at least somewhat breezy up there.

When we (Carolina Mtn Club) were working on the trail over Max Patch last week, I noticed something new: a large area of poison ivy. It is on the eastern approach slope, close to the trail, and too steep for camping. This is an area that gets lots of sunshine. No sign of poison ivy farther up, over the top.
