Im looking at my companion and deciding where to stop. I dont want to stop at Walnut Mountain Shelter becauseI think I may be able to go on. Is there any way that I could just camp on Bluff Mountain even though its not a designated campsite. Is it good for stealth?

there's always a place to just throw down. it doesn't have to be a "designated" campsite. don't over-plan

There is a well used large campsite just South of Bluff Mtn summit, a nice small campsite on top of Bluff Mtn, and a really nice site ~2 miles on the North side of the mtn.

However, there are thousands of trees to hang a hammock from:cool:

there's a good campsite at Garenflo Gap if you want to go that far and stop short of Deer Park. The AT dips to a road before climbing gently away from the road. If you hook a hard right and go up the road past the gate there's a good level spot just up the embankment for a tent. I got good water in March by going down the side trail which descends down a ravine. I had to make a small dam to get the acorn of my filter under water but the results were satisfactory.

there's an extremely flat spot right before the summit of bluff with lots of places to tent. there's also some good spots as you will begin the descent. not a lot of water up there, but there's a spring about halfway down

as lone wolf says, there's plenty of places to tent all over the trail that may not be in the guidebook

I hear ya. Me and Gypsy are leaving to hike the Long Trail in a few weeks. The only real planning I'm doing is figuring out where to park a vehicle for a few weeks. Can't wait to get the heck outta here too. Have fun.

About 1 mile past Walnut Mountain shelter, going north, there is a meadow on the east side of the trail. If you cross this meadow it leads to a wonderful view and good tent sites. I tried to make it on my hike to Hot Springs from Max Patch but we did not have the get up and go. Once I saw it, we wished we had pushed on. We passed a fellow that had camped there and he was gushing over the views etc. Good luck.
