For Father's Day I decided to spend a couple of days hanging out with dad. So we spent the last 2 days doing the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
Not much hiking, but we toured 7 distilleries. Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Heaven Hill, Wild Turkey, Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, and Woodford Reserve.
Very interesting road trip, lots of history. The smaller distillers had much better, more informative, and less crowded tours. Woodford Reserve was the high light of the trip. It is about 20 minutes west of Lexington (Interstate 75) just south of Rt.60. Beautiful limestone buildings dating back to the 1830's and we got to see the whole process from cooking to fermenting, then distilling, filling the barrels, ageing in the rick house, bottling, and finally sipping.
If you are driving thru the area on your way to or from another trail, it is absolutely worth checking out.

Everytime I go to Red River Gorge I see the Woodford Reserve sign. I have wanted to stop but it is usually at night when I pass by. Thanks for the link I just may have to make a trip up there.

My father did the woodford reserve tour a couple of years ago, and was very impressed. He has been on me about getting up there, but I just have not done it.

Not to start a liquor war or anything, but the Jack Daniels tour is awsome (and free!). We talk all of our out of town visitors down to Lynchburg for the tour.

Not to start a liquor war or anything, but the Jack Daniels tour is awsome (and free!). Then drive from the distillery straight across the Interstate to McMinnville and tour Cumberland Caverns with its mid-tour Creationist slide and light show. It's kind of like two bookends on the range of southern culture.

yeah but they won't let you have a sip of Jack Daniels :(

you can also tour the George Dickell distillery. It is right outside of Tullahoma
