I was looking around for a bivy sac, but i didnt find anyhting i liked (because they seem very expensive). So i want to make one out of real thick plastic. 20mil or so. Has anyone ever been in a plastic bivy sack? Was it good bad? any special considerations? What do you all think of this idea?

Ventilation or you will drown. Usually at both ends.

Check out Titanium Goat for inexpensive bivy's. Basic bivy is $40 and weighs 4.5oz.

Plastic isn't a very good material to use. It will trap any and all vapor trying to escape. You will end up wet.

Case in point ...I own a bivy "cover" made out of water repellant nylon and it has a waterproof silnylon lower panel. I pulled it over my bag late at night in the dark over my sleeping bag and accidentally got the silnylon side UP instead of down. During the night I pulled my arm out of my sleeping bag and went to lay it down on top of the bag ...COVERED WITH MOISTURE.

Go with a waterproof BREATHABLE fabric and you'll be a lot happier camper.
