James River (US 501) to Petites Gap - A forest fire has prompted the temporary closure of the 10 mile section of the A.T. from the James River footbridge south to Petites Gap in Jefferson National Forest. I will post an update when this section is reopened.

Our Virginia regional office reports that the USFS is providing a shuttle around the closed area for hikers in the interim.

Our regional office updated us again this afternoon. Kerry Wood there tells us the trail closure due to the forest fire has been rescinded. The situation with regard to the fire is still "ongoing", so there is some potential that section will need to be closed again.

I'm pretty sure I speak for everyone here when I say that it's pretty good of the ATC to be on top of situations like this, and to send along current updates. It is information like this that REALLY makes Whiteblaze useful to folks. Thanx to LaurieP. for joining this discussion, and I hope she starts posting here more often.

A Ranger in SNP told me yesterday that the entire GA trail was open, to the nest of his knowledge.

"to the nest of his knowledge" should have been the clue that he was a birdbrain! :D

Smokey the Bear did his job too well.
Most people don't understand the benifits of control burns.
They see all fire as bad.
Wildfire would be all but memory if control burn programs were adopted.
Forrest litter control and wildlife enhancement are just two reasons control burns are granted by permit. Permit is granted only after plans are approved and conditions are right.
